I have a 1969 CJ5 and the horn button and wiring were gone on it when I got it. There doesn't seem to be any shortage of places to get a replacement button and wiring, but I have not been able to figure out how to route the wiring from inside the steering wheel out and to the horn.

One person told me they had a 72 model and that it had a hole in the steering column near the turn signal control unit, that the wiring came out of. Mine doesn't have any holes anywhere in the column that I can find, and there isn't much if any room inside the column tube once the shaft from the steering wheel to steering box is in there.

Anyway if anyone can be of help on this it will be appreciated. Also is a relay required. One wiring diagram I have found doesn't indicate one.

Doug, A little more info may get a response. Do you have the stock Ross steering? Is the steering wheel stock?
The 1969 CJ5 does not use a relay for the horn. The horn should have two spade terminals on it.One is for a 12 volt constant source and the other is a for a ground source which would be the horn wire in question.
On the stock Ross steering the horn ground wire is routed down thru the center of steering shaft and out the bottom of steering gear
A relay with a fuse could certainly be incorporated into the wiring but is probably not needed.
If you have some other iteration of steering column pictures would be helpful. Mike:)

You can't route a wire to the horn. The OEM setup has a contact that makes a connection as the steering wheel

Dave, that would be true if he has a later steering column. As far as we know it's a stock 1969 which isn't anything like the picture.I can get pictures if he needs them but for now I think I will wait and see what he he actually has.No need guessing at this point. Cheers, Mike

Mine is stock 69 and the wiring is suppose to go down hollow center of shaft and out hole in plug in bottom of Ross steering gear, except that my steering gear doesn't have a hole in the plug at the bottom. I was reluctant to try and drill a hole in the plug since I had just gotten the steering box rebuilt and didn't want to take a chance in creating a leak. So for now I mounted a horn button on the side of steering column opposite the turn signal and ran wiring down outside of the column.

I suppose that PO may have replaced the steering box with one from other year model, but the plug looks to be original. If anyone can tell me that it is safe to drill the plug I would go that route. For now the horn works and isn't to unsightly.

Same problem here:( I have a 65 CJ5 and just installed new steering wheel but cant seems to run the wire down the steering....
Did you resolved the problem? Thanks

No, I just mounted a horn button on outside of steering column and ran wiring on outside. Kept it neat and it looks OK.

There is suppose to be a hole in the plug at bottom of the Ross steering box for the wiring to exit the inside of the steering column through, but mine doesn't have that hole. If yours does then you should be able to run the wiring down inside the steering column and out the hole at bottom of the steering box.

Guys, googgle Ross steering gear. There is a picture that shows the bottom plug with the tube attached. If you can't buy the correct part it looks like you could fabricate something in a hurry.Say a expansion plug with a 1/4"tube brazed into hole long enough to go up past oil level.Weird that someone would have left part out when they serviced the box.
Realy a lot nicer having the proper horn button. My '67 was that way with a button on the dash.Yuk! but it had the hole in the bottom so easy fix.
:)mike
