My V8 CJ runs on the hot side. Thinking about installing an electric fan. What's the best way to go, new aftermarket or setup off a production vehicle?
Any insight would help. Thanx:chug::chug:
 
When's the last time you had a rod-out done on the radiator and a pro flush on the block?
Bet you use 'tap' water with the coolant.

What years? Mistique/Taurus
If I remember correctly '95-'2000 with the V6 motors Ford Contour or Mercury Mystique have the dual fans... I think some Cougars came with the same setup.

Thanx Turbogus I think this is exactly what I'm looking for:chug:
 
When you go to the boneyard get as much of the wiring you can. This'll make the transplant easier and more affordable as some of the wiring is 10 gauge.
I did 'BB' from scratch with relays, senders and switches and I have a few wiring diagrams I can post when you get that far. :)


If you make sure the shroud still has the resistor you can use the two speed feature of these fans;

Thanx, didn't mean to ignore you. Radiator is new and engine is a recent rebuild. I never liked the way my solid fan fits with the radiator so I think elec. fan is the way to go.
 
As Lump said, tap water is bad. Solid fan or electric, don't use tap water if you don't buy premix coolant

What engine temps are you see'n?
I live in the Mojave and have no over heat issues with a 195* t'stat. I do use a shroud.

Recent rebuilds (under 1000 miles) will run hot until the rings are fully seated and things are broken in maybe 10-15* above what it'll run later.

Early on I was dealing with the P.O.s setup. he was using a Hayden controller with that lame radiator probe.

I know there's many folks that like the simplicity of these but after going through an abraded radiator tube leak (by that damm probe) I stuck with Hayden (small footprint) but got the one that is threaded for pipe.

Both of these are adjustable for temperature and to help the fans make the leap from low speed to high I used two of these in a radiator sleeve I got from Summit

It may not be the most elegant solution but as it's a 'roll your own' I can revisit it at a later time.

I learned a lot from folks here, and other forums, some were kind enough to post wiring diagrams they'd created that helped even a neophytle like me get my head around this.

There's more than one way to skin a cat, and certainly many ways to wire these things up but primarily relying on these two diagrams is what got mine working. :)
 
What's the AMP load/draw of those fans?

Less than 40 amps LG, when they're wired independantly. If you wire 'em together you'd need an 80 amp relay.
Originally I was gearing up for that but learned that by dividing the fans it's well within the constraints of a standard relay.

How do you wire in the resistor to get the two speeds? I have the resistor and I bought the pigtail for it with the two wires coming out. Where do those wires go? I have a flexi-lite variable speed controller if that helps. Thanks.
 
When I pulled this shroud/fan assy. (actually I didn't have to pull it, someone had cached it in the trunk of that Merc) I took all of the wiring with it and from what I could tell was tied into the circuit 15S-PA6 (Green/Blue 10 gauge) and 15S-PA16 (Green/White 10 gauge) inside the tightly taped loom. These two passed through a pair of relays (40 amp) to the Blue and Orange wires on my controllers. For this element I primarily used this diagram;

In the process of bench building this setup before installing to 'BB' I came to the conclusion that I had overthunk it, and it's much simpler once you get into it.
As part of this project on 'BB' I also grafted in a Ford PDB so to consolodate all of my underhood relays and fuses. It was quite a mess at first;

but by methodical process I detirmined which were the positive (hot) wires when hooked to 12v then went about isolating each relay and fuse socket socket.

Seems like a lot of trouble but the end result really cleaned up that element of my engine compartment.

Std jeep CJ alternator was 45 amps-
You'll need to upgrade the alternator to keep the battery charge'd.

:notworthy::notworthy:I got my fan setup today off of a '98 Mystique. Mine wasn't in the trunk though. It took some rippin' and tearin' but I got it. Half price day at pick and pull only $27. Thanx :notworthy:
 
That's a good deal. To test hook up the primary wires GN/WH and GN/BU and the Black Ground wire to your battery to test the circuits and fan motors. Just make sure the shroud is held by someone or otherwise secure. Mine wanted to take off like a VTOL aircraft when I did this test. :rolleyes:

'BB' is running the alternator that she came with when I got 'er, looks to be a GM type. She does have a dual battery setup though on account of the winch that I wanted dedicated power for. Still in all, depending on the temperature the fans are set to engage, they won't run the battery down. On the other hand if they're directly connected to the battery without a switch and runs constantly then it's another story.
