I just purchased another CJ, unsure if it is a Renegade , Laredo , or a highly sought after specialty cruiser of some sort-- ha. is there a data base with vin numbers to research this? It is a 84 CJ7 with tach and clock, but no tilt. does have auto. looks like repainted, very badly, and previous owner was clueless except where to put the gas.. thanks
Can try to post pics saturday, just looks like a plain jane black buggy with grey carpet factory interior, someone installed a sweet 401 motor rebuilt and a 400 tranny and a ford 9 inch rear end, they did a nice job with that, but the paint is very lacking, a few spots of cancer to repair this fall with a complete restoration, just trying to find out which model it is
Easiest way from my experience is the steering wheel. 84 Laredos had a leather wrapped wheel with leather wrapped spokes and allen head horn button. Renegades had aluminum spokes, and base models had plastic spokes.
If you don't have the original steering wheel the Laredos also had carpet on the lower door panels (if equipped with hard doors), striped (p)leather seats, and a leather wrapped dash grab bar.
Title just has vin number. Have not checked tag. Seats are low backs steering wheel is just plastic spokes. But it does have the clock and tach
It's missing grab bar and glove box lid. Only has soft top
Without the bill of sale / manf. cut sheet theres really no way to tell. The Renegade or Laredo packages were cosmetic and option bundles and weren't part of the vin. They were just basic Jeeps underneath. Options from those pkgs. could be ordered seperately such as different rims, tires, ac, console, etc., so theres no way of knowing if it came from a pkg., added separately, or from a different vehicle. I don't think the title would indicate a cosmetic package, only the model (Jeep) and the model number (CJ7 ).
1971 cj5 renegade 2 paint code 999 trim 340. Big bad orange, 225 odd fire, t86aa 3 speed,Dana 18 single stick, dana 44 off set rear, dana 27 off set front, 4.89, Koenig pto, koenig pto winch. Production date May 1971

Should be a trim code on the firewall around the fuse box that will tell you what seats you have, for example
Paint color code 2D, or Deep Night Blue and the trim code (3EB, or Slate Blue, High Back Bucket seats in Vinyl-Denim)
We know that denim didn't come on Laredo models, so that eliminates Laredo package from the example Jeep.
You could order a Jeep just about any way you wanted it back then, so with that in mind and the fact that there's no telling what all the previous owners have done, there's really no way to tell without the build sheet (sometimes found under the passenger seat tucked up under the seat).
Easiest way to tell is by the steering wheel, which on the 82-86's were
Leather wrapped spokes with allen head horn button-Laredo (or Limited if column and horn button color are other than black)
Aluminum spoke wheel with reg horn button-Renegade
Plastic spoke wheel with reg horn button-Base
Laredos and Renegades also always had rocker trim, while base models it was an option.
Low back seats weren't common in the 80's, but that coupled with plastic wheel would lead me to think you have a base model somebody ordered with a tach and clock.
See attached build sheet. As you can see, Dad ordered this Scrambler with a few options and they built to his specs. His is a base model
Both of my CJ7 's are Renegades. Had a Laredo rust bucket at one time that I sold.
