Misc How to remove dist cap cover?

Hey guys, I have a 77 CJ7 with a AMC 304 in it. it has an unknown electronic ignition on it. The cap is red (no msd label) with a cover over the plug wire connections that is help on with 4 screws. I went to take it off the other day and the cover only moves about a 1/2 inch. I can see what looks like wire under the cover that I assume connects to something in the cap. (coil?) Do I dare just pulll harder and risk breaking it? pics to follow

That is an HEI distributor and the "cap" you refer to is the cover over the coil with a spring under it that contacts the center terminal in the actual distributor cap for the rotor connection underneath. Your style has the larger cover that also goes over the spark plug wires to help hold them down.



Others have a smaller cover over the coil that doesn't cover the spark plug wires. That is a standard type GM HEI distributor. Underneath the distributor cap (that the wires connect to) you will find the rotor and a 4-pin solid state ignition module. Very common type upgrade to old AMC engines (and others) to eliminate the external ignition box, coil, and extra wiring.
