Hub & Disc Brake Rotor

The service manual says the 79 CJ7 came with a hub rotor combination that is one part. The major parts catalogs list separate hubs and rotors. They sure look like they could be separated. But what gives? My hubs are good, but I would like to replace the rotors if possible. Thanks, Rod

The disk brake hubs are pressed on, which is somewhat of a careful process so the disk does not crack.

Yes, use some penetrating oil, lay it on the floor, put the lug nut on the ends of the studs and hammer away. If need be use a crow bar to separate after the studs are removed. Press the studs in using the new disc.

Or use a press (Dana 44 )

Once I removed the studs I just tapped the rotor off with a 2lb hammer. Let it sit overnight in penetrating oil. You don't need a press to install the studs a hammer will do.

Don't install with a hammer.
'Draw' each stud into place, with a lug nut and washers from the outside.

OK, so that was funny. I took the opportunity last night to press the studs out with my new HF shop press I got a couple weeks ago. Once they were out.......apart came the hubs. Awesome, Thanks. Even got the grandson in on the work. Rod

Show off! "I took the opportunity last night to press the studs out with my new HF shop press" Not all of us has a "new HF shop press". I've done it both ways, with a hammer and drawing them up with a nut. I always felt like I got a better stud seat with a hammer. I've also done it in sort of a hybrid operation, draw them with a nut then pound 'em with a hammer.

Shop safety has always been important to me. If you start them out right at a young age they tend to continue as they get older.
