Good morning. Yesterday I replaced the rotors on my 84 CJ7 . After pulling off the outer nut I noticed the washer was bent in one edge. I didn't think much of it and straightened it out whe. I pit it back together. Now I am thinking it was one to hold the inner nut in place. Is this true? I have a trip this weekend and dont want to fix it on the side of the road. And on the outer nut does the ear point in or out. It was different on each side. Thanks

The bend was there to lock that nut in place as you suspect. Fix it before you take it.

After torquing tge nut and backing it off a bit, set the washer and use a punch to bend an edge over the inner nut to hold it.

That's my only question now it which way the ear goes. In or out. Figured I am gonna take it apart again so I ordered new seal and washers and nuts. Bearings all looked good

Looking at diagrams online is not helping. Hard to tell from the pictures. And my memory sucks. Sorry.

My official shop manual did not have something specifying it. So I looked in the Haynes manual. Does not say which direction either.

I don't know if inner or outer is right but I've always locked the outer.

Well I went a step further. I put the tab in and bent the washer in on top and out on bottom locking both nuts.

LG Come on man ! You got that thing brand new just like me. Tell the guy how it came from the factory. :)

Once you have the inner nut tightened to spec, throw the tabbed washer in there. Then the outter "lock" nut is what holds the inner nut where you put it. You bend the edge of the tabbed washer OUT to assure the outter nut stays put.

Bending the tab washer "in" on the bearing side nut won't do anything to keep the outter nut from coming loose.

One in and one out (like what LG Cduke88 did) adds insurance.

And you think I can remember that far back.:poke:
