I’m currently working on wiring up my 79 CJ5 . It’s getting a new old stock (20yo) painless harness and a full Holley sniper EFI setup. I need a clean keyed source that is hot while cranking. Since I’m using the hyperspark ignition box, I’m thinking the coil positive wire should give me what I need. Should be an independent circuit that is hot in start and run. Can someone please give me a sanity check on this?

That should work as the coil +12v gets its feed while cranking directly from the starter solenoid. However once the starter is disengaged it switches back to around seven volts because of the voltage stepdown ballest. You can also tap into the feed from the starter solenoid anywhere but it's only +12v while cranking.

In summary, tap into a +12v anywhere and the +12v from the selenoid and your guaranteed constant+12v.

I'm working on getting the downloads online right now. I'm sure we have a wiring diagram for your CJ.

With the ignition box the ballast resistor is removed from the equation. So that should keep the voltage at 12v. At least that’s how it works in my mind. The ignition box fires the coil.

If you removed the ballest, I agree... :notworthy:
