So I have been having a cooling issue and it has yet to be resolved. I had to replace the lower hose on my 84 CJ4 cyl. No big deal. Replaced the Tstat while I was in there because I just bought this thing with no history. Well it kept overheating. Factory gauge is inop so I went out and bought an aftermarket gauge. Installed that today and it read nothing and she still overheated. Then pulled the electric fan and out a stock one in. Still no better. Removed the gauge to return it and pulled the new Tstat. Checked it in hot water. Nope nothing. Way to go advanced auto. Went to the parts store and got a new NEW Tstat and a new gauge. Tested them both before install. Good to go. Installed them and still overheating and the gauge didn’t budge. (Now insert new banging my head up against a wall). Shut her down and weird thing is gauge went up to AMC 150 . Checked the coolant temperature with a thermometer. AMC 150 . Hmmm. Started her up again. Coolant temp went up and the gauge went down. (Again banging my head). Only thing I can think of left is maybe the water pump isn’t flowing to optimal velocity. It seems like there’s flow but maybe not enough. Unfortunately the heater hoses have been cut. Heater box is trash. Both hoses are going to the intake manifold. At this point if I don’t quit for the day I’m gonna have a huge lump on my head from banging my head against the wall. Any advise out there?

Well - First thing I’d do is remove the thermostat and start it up. Check for coolant flow in the radiator ( that will tell you how your water pump is pushing water). If you have good flow, drive it a bit and see if it still overheats. Could possibly be a trapped air pocket. Start with that and hold off on the head banging....... for a bit anyway LOL

All of this is shot in the dark thoughts...
Has it always (since you have had it) overheated? Electric fans usually operate on some kind of temp sensor. Have you located that? Not that that has any thing to do with the problem since the electric fan is gone.
Is the new gauge electric or mechanical? If electric could be wrong one, no matter what the parts guy says. Might try mechanical.

Does the water pump look newish? The 6 and 4 water pumps were pretty much interchangeable. At least on my 85 AMC 150 . There were 2 water pumps for the 6, one for the fan belt set up and one that ran backwards for the serp belt 6's. Yes the California CJ's used serp belts. Maybe the wrong pump was installed? Did the PO sell the CJ because he had an overheating problem? :D
As I said shot in the dark thoughts.
By the way, be careful with the torque on the T-stat housing. Over torque it and it will crack easily. As me how I know.
One other thing, since your heater is disco'd does your current path go from water pump to intake from intake to water pump return?

Yes the previous owner complained of overheating. He was a young kid with no mechanical experience at all. Lower hose was routed under the steering shaft. Causing it to rub and puncture. As for the electric fan it’s hard wired to the battery with a toggle switch. And the Gauge I bought is a mechanical Gaige. I have my water pump outta my 6cyl. Same part number. May swap that in. Or just buy a new one. Might try removing the tstat to see the flow.

If that young guy was having over heating problem, you need to really take a good look at what you have going on. Check flow as stated before

I have the water pump outta my other Jeep. Thinking of swapping that one in and removing. The tstat. If I’m gonna open up the system again. Mine as well. Right

If I remove the thermostat should I see it flowing pretty good?

Think there is a rotational marking on the pump :wtf:

Only thing I have ever run without a thermostat is an outboard motor, and that was for more water flow.

Yes - without the thermostat, you will see more flow than normal. It will flow right past the filler neck - unmistakable. Won’t hurt it to run it that way a bit to check for continued overheating. With no t’stat, it shouldn’t reach normal operating temp.

With your belly mashed up against the grille, flow should be left to right.

Just sent you a message. I’ve been seeing coolant flow from right to left

Should be L to R like Shum said

I have the AMC 304 , and my upper hose hits the radiator on the left side....... so my coolant flows from that to the right. Where is the inlet on your radiator - I’m not familiar with the I-4....

On mine top on L , bottom on R

Same here. Wait - He’s not below the equator, is he???

You say that, had a friend that went to SA and equator, right on it. Water swirling in a different direction on each side of it.

Shum8. You’re my new best friend. Pulled the old water pump. Low and behold. Wrong pump. Installed the pump outta my donor and bingo. No overheating. Came up to 190 degrees kicked on the electric fan. Dropped to about AMC 150 .

I screw around on here a lot, but try to offer a small nugget of help when I can. Glad you got it figured out!!
