Im seriously looking for a jeep in the 8-10k range. Can you give me an honest opinion on wether to go CJ or Wrangler? I'd be a first time Jeep owner so can you tell me about ride quality, 4x4'ing differences etc. I'm not mechanically inclined so it would be a Youtube DIY video that would educate me or books.

thanks, any good advice is very much appreciated!

What are your plans for it? I sold my YJ to get my CJ this past year. As a daily driver, the YJ had a softer ride. I have just been wanting a CJ8 since I was a teen.

instinct says cj of course, but it all depends on how much you want to work on it. later model jeeps do ride better (almost car like), are more capable off road, and require less maintenance. on the other hand cjs are cool, they don't ride that great, yeah its a jeep and still very capable off road, and it'll give you the chance to learn a few things about mechanics. if you spend 8-10k on a cj it had better be real nice, but you will still have to work on it regardless i mean they haven't made one in 25 years.

like i said it all depends on how involved you want to be with it. if you go the cj route we are here to help, keep that in mind.

The biggest question is what are you going to DO with the Jeep? Do you have kids, a wife? how does she feel about older rigs (the newest CJ is what? 23 years old?)
Will you be depending on this for daily driver/family hauler status, or will it be a weekend toy to go trail riding with?
Are you willing to learn how to work on it? The CJs are mostly very simple to work on, the Wrangler not so much (but not a hi-tech monster either!)
What are your priorities? Ride quality? Go fast street machine? looking cool and getting the chicks (the CJ beats them all here!).
We would need to get to know you and your situation a little better to give you a honest opinion.

BUT, since this IS a CJ site, get a later CJ7 (early 80's). No question! Then when you get used to that one, you can step UP to the CJ-5s... :)
and stay away from anything with square headlights!

:ww: to the forums! :ww:

From what this small post gives me information wise I think your looking for a Tj. 97 and up year wise.

I'm with Pete here, if your not into working on your rides a cj is not for you. You can get a better tj that will ride better, drive better and out wheel a cj for 10 grand.
We all own cj's because we love them for what they are, not because they are better.

Having wheeled and street driven both, Id say if you haven't owned a CJ,... you'd probably be better off in a TJ.

A CJ, is.... hmm, I'm not sure how to put it, but its counter-intuitive. So if you like jeeps and need one to drive and not take apart and put back together with a potpourri of other vehicles parts, go with the TJ.

They actually wheel better than a CJ stock to stock, ride better, and depending one what CJ powertrain you might wind up with, even run better and more reliably. Just my $.02.

Oh, if you find a CJ for 8k, you better have somebody who knows CJs take a real hard look at it. You could wind up with a real turd if its completely stock, and could be a real turd if it was put together with a bunch of other truck parts, and not done well. Ive seen and endless number of hacked Cjs for the handful that where well done. 8k for a Cj is allot of money... better be one handsome rust free, well functioning machine.

thanks for the info. I think you've already helped me decide, with kids, little time and just a desire to off road/cruise in a second "fun" car, i'll go with a later TJ type. Looking forward to joining the Jeep world!

Keep in touch, and let us know what you buy.:chug:
