I have a 77 CJ7 that the previous owner rigged up a push button dash mounted ignition. You have to push in a rod and then push a button on dash to start it. I want to be able to start with a key. How do I go about this? Thanks

I'd start by buying the stock ignition switch. Then trace the wiring diagram down to see if the wires are still there. The PO either bypassed a problem or did something else.Is it a column mount ignition or one on the dash.I can't remember.I have a wiring diagram if you need it.

The wires are still there. It looks like the actuator rod that connects the key cyllinder and the ignition switch was broken and instead of replacing it PO rigged it up to start it you have to push the rod in and push a button. Is there a kit available that would replace the actuator rod from the key cyllinder to the ignition switch? Thanks.

If the column is butchered, you will need to get the parts to rebuild it from a J/Y. You should have a tilt column so, any GM tilt column will be OK to use to get the parts.

The outer shell of the column is in good shape. The ignition switch is good as well as the wiring. I just need the inside stuff, actuator rod assmbly etc. I can get these parts from a GM Column? Which model? or can I get it new from a parts store and what do i ask for? thanks

Yep - get the parts from any intermediate GM column, you won't find them at a parts store - but any junk / scrap yard will easily hook you up. Jeep used a GM tilt steering column.

I believe the year would be 73- 80's for the steering columns.Look at a Chevy Truck of that year same column.

Thanks for the help. I will let you know how it turns out.
