Sorry. I'm a QuadraTrac fan. Pep up your AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and keep your automatic (your wife might appreciate the auto).

IMO, keep it factory but work that AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l over… tons of threads about the 4.0 head and mpi… to me and I dont know much but the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , gears, and maybe the tranny swap and the jeep should be more than capable. Its your jeep though and as long as you post pics, I don't mind. Your still keeping history alive.

bought my jeep with a 283 chevy motor,I plan on putting the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l back in it.the 283 is ok but it just aint right i guess,it could just be me[chevy hates me]i just want it stock.I'm also new to jeeps of my own,but my brothers have them.I like what i read on here and have big plans for mine.the 6 might be better for the grandson, but thats your call

I just inherited a beat to heck 1977 CJ7 that I would like to completely rebuild. I don't know much about it other than it has the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l straight line 6, automatic QuadraTrac (???) Transmission and approx. 124,000 miles.

You didn't mention a problem with the Jeep, "beat to heck" could mean different things to different people.

It has short miles for a 77 at only 124k, if you can get the engine running decent and take care of any safety issues without a big hassle I would then recommended doing so and enjoy your Jeep for awhile before digging into a long term rebuild.
