Intake/Exhaust leak! Help!

I have been rebuilding my CJ for a while now, suspension, body, paint, wiring etc... Now I'm getting the motor ready so I can drive the thing (finally). There is a bad exhaust leak, looking closer it looks like the intake and exhaust don't meet up properly. Any help would be appreciated. Not sure if a thick gasket can fix this. ...am I missing an adapter plate?

Take the 2 manifolds off and run a flat file across the surfaces to clean-up and remove any possible burrs.
Remount and tighten the nuts/bolts from the center, alternating on each side outwards. IIRC the torque spec is 35ft/lbs.

Even with that big gap? ...just want to make sure I don't have parts that are not compatible.

Did they come off that engine?
Have you check'em with a known flat edge?

Well, it's an aftermarket intake (Clifford)... The original had a one bbl carb, this guy swapped it out to go with a Holley 2bbl. I'm guessing the exhaust manifold is stock.

Like I said-Ck it on a known flat surface. Even widow glass.
My bet, if the bolt down procedure I told you doesn't permit uniform seal'n. Then the exhaust manifold may well be warp'd.
Have you ck'd the cyl. head to be sure it's not part of the issue?

Try googling remflex and Percy's gaskets. I have the remflex on my v8 exhaust manifolds and they work awesome. They are a thick, squishy build up that will seal gaps. Not sure if they make one for you application but you might be able to make one work or cut a custom one. Good luck. Remflex.com

I ordered some remflex material on Amazon... I'm going combine both of your suggestions and hope that does the trick. If not I may be stuck getting a different exhaust manifold.

There's most of your problem. I've dealt with their products before. It seems like they don't care about quality since the original owner passed away and it's worse than any chineese junk that I've ever seen. You may have to get an old one to put on. Did you keep the old one?

Basically it's spring load, when they have the manifold clamped down for welding and release one side (passenger side on V8). Always check a new intake manifold with a straight edge before installing.

If you buy a edelbrock 2131 manifold for a V8 make sure you check both sides, particularly the passenger side because that is the side they release first.
The last one I bought I didn't check and it leaked shortly after installing. After removing it the passenger side was off .010" the driver side was straight. Edelbrock tolerance specs is 007" The next one they sent was off again on the passenger side .007", .008", and .010" in different spots towards the middle. Of all the leaking edelbrock 2131 manifolds I've repaired in the pasts have all been leaking on the passenger side.

Ok so I just took a closer look. The holes done even line up! Pretty sure the exhaust is stock and the Clifford intake isn't designed for it... Now the question is, do I find another exhaust manifold or do I need a whole new setup.

I have the stock intake from the guy who sold me the jeep, and the 1bbl carb... I want exhaust options I have (if any) before deciding to go back to stock

By any chance do you have studs in there to locate the manifold? I have had better luck using all bolts instead of studs to get all the holes to line up. GM v8 exhaust manifolds are well known for not lining up correctly and have special tooling to spread the holes into position. I wonder if you could get one of those manifold spreaders to move that manifold into position.

You can get a stock intake off of a newer one that is a 2 barrell.

Is the Clifford manifold meant for this motor?? I'm confused about why it doesn't fit... Can't imagine there aren't other options for exhaust... If I went with a header, would I just cap the bottom of the intake where it mates with the exhaust manifold?

Are you sure that's a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ?
