Iron duke casting numbers

Is there any way to tell from casting numbers if my iron duke is original to my scrambler. Did they cast serial numbers in the block? Or date codes? It's been re painted at some point and wanted to verify originality.

Just found your unanswered question.

There is a ID code on the D-side rear top of the block. The two character code is 4p or 4z. If the engine was built in GA or TN it will have a number stamped on the D-side rear block flange as well.

If you have an auto Transmission and/or AC with the two character codes I listed the engine isn't original to the Jeep.
If you don't have those two character codes in the location I mentioned the engine isn't original to the Jeep.

You should have a B engine code in your vin as well.

You will need to post up the other stamped numbers as it may have a build date included.

Is there something that makes you think it isn't the original engine?

Are you doing a complete restoration back to original?

Have you backtracked your Jeep's history, past owners, odometer miles compared to engine condition?

The engine needs a rebuild. 90psi in 3 cylinders. I don't have any records of its previous ownership. I'm on the fence of restoring it to original or an amc v8 swap. It's got the SR4 and no a.c. there's also a rebuilt iron duke I found but wasn't sure if anyone would be able to tell it wasn't original. The reman engine is about the price of the rebuild kit itself. They want to get rid of it and nobody really wants a duke anymore.

This implies to me your concern about a potential buyer knowing you swapped out the original engine.

If this is true a seller has a legal obligation to inform a buyer of those known facts under full disclosure laws. Plus, it's the right thing to do.

no intent to ever sell my 8. Just don't want anyone to be able to tell if it's not the original one. Plus if I could prove mine was really the original one I'd be more likely to rebuild and keep it. If I knew for a fact it wasn't the factory motor I'd be pulling it and throwing it in the dumpster. If I get that rebuilt one I'd run that and eventually get mine rebuilt but only if it was the right one.

Even if you like the 4-popper. You will LOVE an AMC V-8.
IMHO-go '8'. You will need a tranny stronger than that SR4 .

If your never going to sell your 8 I doubt anyone would know if it's anything other then original. I think your good there.

I've got a 176 just in case I do go v8. Just found out that rebuilt "jeep" iron duke has a 60° bellhousing. Looks like that one is out

Not sure if I like the 4. Bought my scrambler 5 years ago, drove it 100 miles home then decided it needed paint. It's been in various states of restoration since I got it. Need to get it back together.

I couldn't find the 4p or whatever number bear the rear of the block. I found on the side where it says gm and below it 10012189 which all I can find is 1979-81 GM 151 ". Couldn't find any other data with it. I did find a little raised part below the cylinder head in the rear that said wcp on it.

I found where someone with an 81 CJ5 had a 10012189 block so I'm feeling a little better. At least that number matches up to other jeeps.
