Is this a T4 or T176?

Is this a T4 or T176?
I found that page and found the following:

Front T-5 31.75
Front T-176 29.50
Rear T-5 20.80
Rear T-176 22.90

I'm going to order a new Transmission mount, engine mounts, flywheel, clutch, and pilot bushing while I'm in there. More than likely I'll go with a Centerforce and poly bushings so they last. I'm in no hurry to get this done, but these things are adding up quickly!:eek:

Oh and thank you for taking a picture in advance.

You don't need a new flywheel, just take it to a machine shop for resurfacing.

If you get a clutch kit then it will come with a pilot bushing, clutch alignment tool and throw-out bearing otherwise you need to order then separate. Good chance the pilot bushing will be wrong and you will have to hunt down the correct one.

Noticed the rust on the input shaft slide/guide. May need to look into how to handle it. Check to see if it's just minor surface rust or is pitted. Don't just start sanding away

Well, FWIW here are a few pics. Can't get far enough down to get the whole thing in. Use the first 3 holes from the front on the frame. The 4th is not used.

Only have experiance with putting a skid back on 2 frames, but in both cases the skid will twist/torque/change shape a little. Have a couple pieces of 2x4 and a bottle jack handy or a good ratchet strap ready when you put the skid back on. Use them on the frame depending which way the skid or frame shifted when the skid came off. Put all the bolts back in loosely then let the jack/strap go, then torque the bolts down.

If you are getting the Transmission , another thing to order now is a shifter spring and cap. It is what holds the shifter in. The spring tends to weaken over time. A bad or weak one can cause the shifter to lock in one gear. :(

You can kinda see the shifter cap/spring holder in the pic.

Pete, you let me know when you have a good one for sale for $350. I just may be interested. Now isn't a good time but in the not so distant future I'll be in the market for a spare.

Yes, I believe I read the same thing that Torx said. A T-4 /T-5 bellhousing can be drilled to fit a T-176 . So 2 driveshafts is what would be needed to convert to it.

You missed out, I just had one that i sold to a dude in Delaware for 300 bucks.

$200. Not too bad.

Don't preorder your drive shafts. Wait until the transmision/Transfer Case is mounted, then measure the actual distance between as shown in a previous post.

When I got my CJ5 the shafts were completely thrashed and not a standard lenght. I went to a jeep salvage place and got really great shafts for $75 each that were a little longer than needed. A local driveshaft shop cut them down for $100 each. A little expensive, but WAY cheaper than having new shafts built.

(Too late)I'm getting a used stock rear one that'll get me to the axle shop to cut and balance the front.

Thanks for the advice though.

You'll probably be alright with a stock one, How much can they be off....

BTW you should check the metal tag riveted to the case for the number. Most I have come across are T177's. Only difference is first (and reverse) gear ratio. T177 is a tad bit lower. Rebuild kits are the same, but if you need to replace a gear, they will be different.

5359389=T-177 3.82 first gear
5359890=T-176 3.52 first gear

I'm wondering how many are driving around with a 177 thinking they have a 176. Seller for mine thought it was a 176 as well.

My guy thought it was a T-4 till I informed him otherwise. I thought it was a 176 since I thought that was the common one
