Hello All,

First time post but I am a former 1994 YJ and Liberty CRD owner which I had to sell when I had kids, now they are older and I would like to find a fixer upper CJ5 or 7. I am hoping to find one for 2-3k to start off with but wondering which one would be the best for first time? I am wanting to stick with AMC and always like the CJs my dad had when I was a kid.

I vote for the '7'. :chug:
More front and rear leg room to start with.
The '7' is much easier to get in and out of.

There are definitely trade offs. I have an '81 CJ5 and love it. On the road it's more bouncy than a '7. You have to be much more selective about what gear you bring along because of the reduced amount of space. Off road though, I love the maneuverability of the '5 and just the all around feel of it. Two of my brothers like the '7 and I do envy their ride down the road and extra room. I don't think you can go wrong with either but I believe there is a bigger preference for the CJ7 . It's probably a better all around vehicle.

As you get older, you will probably fit better into a -7 or a -8.

I agree 100 percent with this ! Getting in and out and the extra room can make all the difference once you put all that work & money into your CJ

I have had both and like the 7 better. The wide trac axles make it handle better on the road and they came with hard tops and doors.

I love the look of the MBs and CJ5s but I’m 6ft3 in I couldn’t easily fit in a 5 so I bought a 7 and don’t regret it, also more top/door options on a 7

I wanted a 5 for the old school look, but after driving a bunch of 5's, they all seemed too squirrelly on the road... ended up with a 7...happy.
