:xj:very nice jeep glad to see it get used

Wednesday morning Dan, Denise and myself had a late breakfast in Ouray before starting our trail ride. We left town at about noon and headed south on highway 550 for 7 miles. Here we got to the townsite of Irontown. It's a ghost town with a couple of buildings back in the trees if you know where to find them. This is were we locked our hubs and started on the trail to Corkscrew pass. We were already at 9700 feet of elevation when we pulled off the highway but the trail continues to climb for the next hour. Much of today would be at very high elevations.
Corkscrew pass goes among the 3 mountains called the Red Mountains. They are red because of the iron ore in them. Here Dan crests the pass.

Here is a view of the east side of Corkscrew pass. We won't be descending much below the tree line before we climb back up to go between the 2 mountains on the left.

Next Dan's Hurricane engine followed me up Hurricane pass. Then we continued on to California Pass.

We went over the 3 mountain passes without really descending. Next we got to Animas Forks Ghost town.

Now we were on the Alpine Loop and we would stay on the Alpine Loop through tomorrow. We headed up Cinnamon Pass.
This next picture is of American Basin.

We didn't arrive at our motel in Lake City until 7:00 PM. That was 7 hours of four wheeling.

You guys are killing me!!!
I so very much wanted to be there this year.
This year you have one guest, I bet there are more next year.
this is a good start.
I swear, I will ride the loop again before I die!!
For those that have not done it, I promise it will become a defining point of your life. "That was 2 years after we rode the Alpine loop" will be a reference of lesser events.
This was the most fun I ever had with my cloths on.:D
Please keep the pictures coming.:notworthy:

We spent the night in Lake City and headed back over Engineer Pass (part of the Alpine Loop).
There are very few east/west routes over these mountains.
You can take Engineer Pass, Cinnamon Pass or a third route, not really considered part of the Alpine Loop, is Stony Pass.
If you wanted to drive from Lake City to Silverton and stay on paved highways you would have to drive for hours. The Alpine Loop is the shortest path but since it is four wheel drive it still takes hours. It took us 5 hours to go from Lake City to Silverton via Engineer Pass. We left at 9:00.

This was the first day of a FJ Cruiser convention and there were hundreds of these cross-eyed Japanese thingies all over the mountains. They traveled in herds of about 10 and Dan and I would pull to the side of the trail to let them pass. Normally whoever is going uphill has the right of way but when there are 10 FJs coming down it's easier to just get out of the way instead of expecting all of them to find turnouts.

Here we are at the lookout at the top of Engineer Pass.

We descended down to Silverton and had dinner at Handlebar's Restaurant.

Dam I wish I could have made it. Glad to see your having a great time.:chug:

So where is the 2nd Annual Jeep-CJ.com Trail Ride going to be? Ohio? Tennessee? I know there are a lot of members in the east. Just asking. Not that I would be able to take my CJ all that way.

Harlan co. Ky. (Black Mountain) would be a great place, everything from mild to wild.

Next year is a long way off but my thoughts on the topic are that I would wait to see if someone else wanted to organise a trail ride in the area they are familiar with. I sure didn't get many people to show up in Colorado. Maybe it would be more popular elsewhere.
If it doesn't look like anyone else will organise an event then maybe, just maybe, I will organise another Colorado Trail Ride.
On the other hand, if any of you guys plan on bringing your CJs to SW Colorado then PM me in advance and I would be glad to show you some mountain trails. :D

maybe we should do a poll to see what area people might be insterested in.

Sounds good Old Dog. We need to start a thread to plan the next trail ride. I'm not sure if a poll to find out where people would want to go would work out. I would love to do a trail ride in British Columbia. Now that is some beautiful country! But I don't know who would organise it. (besides it's too far for 90% of our members)
I honestly don't know how to decide on the next trail ride. I guess we need people to volunteer to organise one in their area. Then we can do a poll.

Busa, If you want to start a thread I'll volunteer to head something in my area and see if anyone esle will step-up from other areas of the country.

Is there anything Planned for Spring / Summer 2012? I am in Afghanistan but I have about 5x Jeepers with me that would love to go! ! !

:)Busa

What did you do to some of those photo's like of the buildings that look like there antiqued?
:D
HDR Photography. That stands for High Dynamic Range photography. I take 3 pictures, one overexposed, one underexposed and one just right. Then I use HDR software to combine the pictures. That brings detail out of the highlights and shadows.
