Anybody know of one?

Gotta do something about the rear suspension. Torque is twisting the leaves apart to where the second leaf is cutting a notch into the front spring hangar.

You need to look up a guy who goes by fuzz 401, I've seen his CJ in a couple different mags.

Thats actually the jeep I just saw in a video! He is still running leaves in the back so I know it can be done without going to a four link.

Thanks for the screen name; I'll try and find him.

Research "bam bar" and see what you think. It works like a pinion snubber. Pinion snubbers work great. I know of many very fast Mopar's with leaf springs running pinion snubbers. I ran one on a way overweight ( 4,300#'s ) Mopar that was not only running stock springs but they were the original springs installed at the factory in 1971. In fact the whole suspension was the original pieces. It plants the 10.5" rears pretty well with 550hp/650 ft/#'s and all of that weight wanting to stay stationary:

So if it can make 30 year old leaf springs plant the slicks hard enough to lift a tire on that heavy pig I think it may be worth investigating for your rig.

I actually built a set of traction bars so the axle wrap condition is handled.

Im concerned about the rotation: the right rear tire lifting up. Went in front of the house yesterday and at about 1500rpms and a quick clutch release I can see the left rear tire moving back. Goes down (BFG MTs actually squat ok) but I think the narrow 2" springs on those little perches are too easy to twist. I know the short wheel base is a multiplying factor in trying to rotate the axle like that.

I know the YJ springs are wider but is that just on the fronts?

Checked out the bam bar; that may solve both of my problems and I can ditch the traction bars. I'll have to look into it some more. Still think those skinny springs are letting the axle rotate. Maybe I can just get a leaf from another set of springs and add it to the right side.

Thanks man!!

My old boy was 8 or9 in the pic. he's 12 now and starting to slow down some. He still gets excided for hunting season though.

Mines gettin the gray too. It makes me unhappy.

Sucks that they only make it as long as they do......

Replaced my daughters mattress a few months ago and decided to let Bo check it out for a min while I drank a beer. A min turned into about a week until the wife decided we couldn't have that in the kitchen when neighbors came over...

When I replace my Cal King he'll be stylin' again!

Maybe some of you guys can help me out.

What are some of the different springs specifications? Length, width, etc.

I see in 76 they went to a 2.5" spring. Is that the widest one? And then people run the XJ/YJ ones because they are a little softer? Are there any that are even wider?

I might stretch the 5 a little while I do this; saw where the XJ spring is a little longer and you can flip it and it'll push the axle back six inches. Or I could just get some 76-? springs and move the hangars back. I already have a fuel cell so if it ends up in the back it doesnt matter.

Throw in your input. I can build new traction bars or do the bam bar.

I hear yea my Bear is 9 now and for a big dog that is AMC 150 lbs that is getting pretty old. He is my best friend alway by my side. I have seen him slowing down big time and it is going to kill me when I lose him.

Ya he was loving it. Shoulda gotten rid of the wife and kept the mattress in the kitchen:rolleyes:

My Moose is almost 14 now. He has had a good run for a bigger dog ( Lab/Chesapeake Bay retriever mix). He is almost completely deaf now but he seems to still be getting some joy from life. He is one of those lucky SOB's who apparently won't go grey no matter the age...

The first action when you release the clutch fast and have an adequate traction surface is the wheel tries to wrap up inside the tire.........I'm sure you have watched Drag cars leave the starting line and see the sidewalls collapsed & stretched out in the direction of travel........... when it does that the tire and rim obviously gets smaller and your vehicle drops..............and in your case with rear shackles the rear end will go towards the rear as the spring is forced to get longer in its collapsed state ............once you get wheel speed up and the car is moving the reaction starts to reverse itself and the suspension slowly goes back to normal. This of course all happens in a small amount of time.

With the traction bars properly installed the rear end should not wrap up regardless of the spring package.

Check your sidewalls and see if there are any stretch marks?

We correct that action on the Drag Strip via various methods including tire pressure, stage RPM, clutch and sometimes Ignition timing.......We always like to overpower the track for a split second when the clutch is released and spin the tire's maybe a few revolutions ..........this allows the car to move forward while keeping the tire round which aides in getting the car up on top of the tire so it will accelerate.

I actually think my tires are hardened a little from sitting so long. There are a bunch of cracks in between the lugs now. I was actually surprised to see the left rear tire bulge during launch at all. Going to set up a video camera so I can capture whats going on over on the passenger side. And go buy some new tires that should hook better on the street.

What concerns me too is that even when I'm just pulling out of my driveway I can feel the axle walking around a little under there. This is my first Jeep and first leaf sprung vehicle; maybe this is normal for such a short vehicle? I was thinking about the shackle and leaf spring operation when I looked down and saw the tire move. I have softened the spring rate significantly by shortening the two lowest spring leaves so that probably adds to the problem.

Got a reply from Fuzz and he actually has the Skyjacker lift I have along with chopping a couple of the lower leaves. He just has a later year with the 2.5" wide springs.

Next plan is to video the components during launch; I've got a go pro at work that I can grab next week so I'll just put up a video from a camera on the sidewalk later today or tomorrow.

Thanks guys

What kind of times are you running. I`d like to run mine. But i can`t pass tech inspection, due to my fuel cell being on the rear floor and in the drivers compartment. If i broke in the 14`s on 35" tires. I`d be tickled poopieless.:)
