Where are you guys mounting any jerry cans? I have a CJ5 no tailgate with stock bumperettes. Any pics appreciated. Thanks.

Seems like an easy answer. Not so much these days. I built the above Jerry Can (2 cans)/tire carrier. With everything together it is a lot of weight. Some folks get worried about adding this amount of weight to the sheet metal body. It could eventually tear the body apart. That seems a little dramatic to me, but it's something to consider. I've also seen one of the less sturdy mounts for the back with a tire and a rack above the tire with can holders in the middle crack from excessive flexing. Those big strong rectangular tubing racks with tapered bearing hinges seem indestructible, but also very expensive.

The coolest idea I think I read here was to mount receiver hitches on the frame just in front of the doors. Then make Mounts for Jerry Cans to sit on a receiver. In this way you have the cans when needed, but can remove them when you don't.

Be aware that the traditional American Jerry Can holders don't fit NATO Jerry Cans. I used the jerry can holder built by Smitty Built.

The oem tire rack is a bit weak to add on the weight of 33s plus 5 gals of gas, I think anyway. I have a modified aftermarket rack from a company that is long out of business that will support 33s and two cans:
I did have to move the tailights out of the way though. It is supported by mounts on both sides of the rear of the Jeep.
 
Dan - I didn't see those carriers before purchasing the Smitty built version. I would have purchased theirs instead. I also like the short 2.5 gallon cans. Due to weight I just might switch to two of those rather than two 5 gallon cans (either 2 gas cans or one gas and the other water).
 
yeah it deff looks to be quality unit, the can is very nice. was looking last night and think im gonna weld and A frame or something off my swing and mount it over the left tail lamp so it would effect opening..will post pics.
 
JR - Hey, your cans were a lot shinier back then. :laugh:

I know of a fellow Jeeper that has/had a rack much like yours. His came tumbling down due to stress cracks. Yours is probably a much sturdier design, but it looks much the same.
 
lol - I sanded and painted them - then they got beat up on the trail next trip! Still shiny though. The video was later than the photos - tried looking for more recent ones, but those showed the rack the best.

I do need to devise a locking system though - one of them was stolen off the rig... what really pisses me off is they took the top mount bracket too, so I have to custom build a new one :mad:

That rack is pretty stout. It mounts to my custom bumper too and steel reinforcement inside the bed.

I can't find the photo, but it also doubles as a kids jungle gym... My little cousin loves to hang off it upsidedown... :D

More worried about all the weight on steel climbs, though it hasn't flipped me with the heavy v8 counterweight in the front... yet...

As I look at your CJ I see a side filler, so you've got a rear gas tank, then a filler for an under seat gas tank AND 2 - 5 gallon cans. You've got some serious range my friend. I do wish I'd installed an under seat tank. Maybe I will someday. Do you get much gas smell in the cab while driving with fuel in the under seat tank?

I do like the looks of a well set up CJ.

Yea I have total of 36 gallons on there... ;) Not much - more exhaust fumes when wheeling from the fender-well headers. I had some leaks in caps and fuel lines for a while, but got those mostly sealed up... :eek:

got started. need to weld in one more brace along the bottom.. welds arent beautiful but it holds my 200lbs hanging from it and not bad for my first welding project. will post a few more when i get it finished with the holder on:)

Looks very tall, I'm interested in seeing it all mounted and loaded up. Is the arm for a High Lift Jack?
 
I keep the hi lift inside. I'm mounting the can mount to the extra arm I hammered/welded onto the tire swing.
 
Given that the driver is on the left side, I would have pu the extra fuel weight on the right side.
 
it seemed to effect the full swing of the gate on that side. then not allowing the tailgate to open.
 
That seems odd, but I suppose the can would hit the side before the gate was fully open.
 
Just a question. You guys with cans leave em on all the time? Or just when traveling? I know the fuel will break down eventually but is being in the sun all the time an issue like a plastic can.
 
I've been debating that very thing. A fuel stabilizer is definitely needed. I wouldn't use a plastic can unless it was military grade. They are pricey, but the heavy NATO cans are very difficult to beat. I've been considering dropping back to the 5 gallon cans, one for water one for fuel

.... AND one of the Jerry can sites has the coolest thing. It's a can top or mouth that has a 1/4' or so pipe welded in it with a breather hole. They are made to be used for generators and such for a fuel supply. But if you have a can higher than the gas tank on the back of your jeep just put one of these on your can, run a hose (naturally you need a hose inside the can as well) into your tank and gravity feed your CJ a drink without the need to remove the can from your CJ at all. I can't see it getting any cooler than that.
