So I just bought my 79 CJ5 yesterday and of course it was downpouring yesterday driving it home. The top had a few random leaks, which its a BestTop aftermarket part, so who knows about the quality...

I think water is running down the windshield, and over this 1 inch wide looking rubber seal that is dry rotted and cracked/split, its only got spray paint holding it together I think.

Anybody know what this seal is called? Don't plan on driving this in the rain, or even going off roading with it (I live in a city), but would like to have it somewhat weather proof for winter when it comes and assuming I can get it started in the cold.. ;)

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

That's the windshield seal and they can be replaced, try Morris 4x4. Bestop is probably the best soft top available, pretty much second to none.

Technically its the windshield cowl seal. Sometimes when you say windshield seal places want to give you the seal for the frame that seats the glass. Just bought one myself , look to spend $40-$50. Be pepared to find rust under it and on the windshield frame.

A little piece of advice...
Use a bead of clear RTV on the upper edge of the cowl seal. I also put a small "grout" line around the window seal between the metal frame and the rubber seal.

It seems no matter how well you install the seal, they find a way to leak. And you do not want water between the rubber seal and the metal frame.

The silicon on the cowl seal....same concept. I quite dropping my front wind shield years ago as the "outback Jack" look went out with Rubic's cubes and mullets, so sealing it up with silicon is added piece of mind against water intrusion.

So could I just rtv silicone it instead of getting a seal? And then maybe paint over it? I have no intentions of ever putting the window down

paint is hard on the seal and causes to become even more brittle. The seal is simple to change

No, it is too thick to be replaced with silicone. you need something to take up the space.

You will need to replace the cowl seal and deal with any rust that you find.Covering up with silicone is not a option. You probably won't like what you find under that old seal.Welcome to jeep repair 101. Mike
