Ok, Folks got issues. I just completed 22 days of guiding deer hunts in the sand hills of Western Nebraska. The CJ5 did awesome for the first 20days. On Day 21 it stalled on flat level ground, ran rough when I got it started and made it about 5 miles missing, backfiring and lacking power.
Seem starved of gas. Gauge doesn't work so. Borrowed gas from the ranch, not the freshest and got it going. Seem to come out of it and I pulled out the Haynes manual. Replaced the rotor, dist. cap, fuel filter and spark plugs, new plug wires and it ran great. Fresh gas and let it run for 10 minutes, started to head the 20 miles home and it died and won't start. Getting gas, getting spark, just cranks. Carb sputters fuel and seems too wet. What next......... Fast idle didn't seem to work when I started it the last time and had to hold the peddle to keep it running. Once it was warm seem to run fine.... Thoughts anyone.

:)Mule Deer I assume? How about some pictures.

Sounds fuel related.......pull your carb and see if there is any debris in the float bowl......might be something in the tank , dirt , rust that came loose while bouncing, might have to change the needle and seat and reset the floats.......blow the fuel line out between the tank and carb. & change the filter again........best to use a clear one inline that you can see also check your vent in the tank could be plugged and creating a vacuum.........is that a stock ignition or something with an ignition box? If it has a box could be that........check your grounds to everything related to the motor. If it has points change them and also the condenser.

Thanks guys, will try everything u noted. Gonna make the round trip tomarrow with the trailer to get it back. Muley's and River Whitetails tarry99. Stock ignition stock GM 151 with a Rochester 2bbl. Don't know if this is related but when this happened the left blinker light on the indicator turned on and stayed on blinker quit, like a bad bulb. disconnected the battery to work on it and when I reinstalled, blinker worked and the light went out. Could the issue be a short somewhere.

:)Sounds like a Ground............when you have electrical anomalies added to another problem..........like I said check your ground paths , but do check everything else.

Dump some dry gas in the tank. Sudden shutdown this time of year always sounds like ice in the fuel to me. ....... but then you mentioned the flasher issue, which point to a short somewhere. Was the Jeep particularly wet?

The CJ went from mid 60's to low teens overnight. lots of condensation on the soft top etc. It is getting fuel into the carb and I tried putting a little fuel into the carb. When it died the last time it had run at low idle for about ten minutes. Put it in reverse to start the trip home and it choked and died. Now it just cranks. I'll have to write all this down and make the trip to go an get it. Thanks to everyone for the heads up. Ill keep working on this more issues to come I think.

BiggWrench this cj ran for 7 months on surface streets and light off road, but then went through 20 days of prairie off road. Not hard no rock climbing, but not on paths or roads either. Maybe something shook loose any ideas where to start.

When a vehicle runs great one day then doesn't run well at all, I always ask, "So, what has changed?"

Big Wrench you nailed it after allot of trial and error it took a new distributor. The timing is back where it belongs and the Jeep on the Prairie is running. I also put in a new coil and cap and rotor just to be safe. Thanks again Folks It awesome knowing that you guys are out there. Have a Merry Christmas everyone.

:chug: pretty amazing what a tune up can do

I was going to say ignition module, but it did sound like a fuel related issue. So, I guess it was the pick up coil. Glad the problem was solved.
