I have a new to me 1979 CJ7 , Inline 6, T-150 3-speed, Dana 20 Transfer Case . My understanding is that locking hubs were optional in 79. My does not have locking hubs. When I shift into 4low the front tires spin so it seems to work. If I jack the front up and spin the tires the front axle also spins.
If I were to instal locking hub would the front axle then only spin if the hubs are locked? What is the advantage of having locking hubs in the first place?

Thanks,
Greg

Actually, I was under the impression that by '79 locking hubs were standard. From what I understand the advantage of a locking hub was a gas mileage thing. I think the later models the locking hubs also acted for a fuse as a weaker joint than the axle u-joints. Most guys switch them for the stronger aftermarket versions anyway. If you go to a full time front locker, for sure you will want a switch. I have unlocking hubs on all four corners.

Maybe I missed it. - automatic or manual Transmission ?

Confirm you don't have Quardra-Trac.
Is your rear diff in the center or really off set to one side?

Okay, after further investigation it turns out that I do have locking hubs, oops my bad :bang:

The PO had custom wheels and I discovered the center hub cap was removable. Took it off and what do you know... locking hubs :)

They were in 4D so I moved then to 2D. I'm curious to see if my gas milage improves?
