Longest Journey in a CJ?

I have a dream of my Jeep in the Rockys. Maybe someday when the kids are grown and I have more money. I will have a hard time convincing my wife to ride that far in it though(I'm pretty sure the Jeep could make it ok). Has anyone done any research on shipping a Jeep? Why does adventure(me) and comfort(my wife) have to be so far apart from each other? I guess we will continue to meet in the middle as we have thus far. Hey Pa, did you ever think about making the trip west again or are you getting too old & soft like some of the other posts on this thread?

I would love to go west again with the Jeep. Not necessarily driving it to there though. Too paranoid about a breakdown somewhere along the line. This time though I think it would be the rockies also. To me those have the quintessential Jeep trails that I grew up reading about. But I still dream of doing the rubicon. My wife would probably go but she'd want to take her Jeep!
And I'm only 51 so I'm still young...... right?

That's sooo true. Been acting like I was 25 again today-racing old men in sports cars up & down the highway, for sport Trixie needed to run...

I would have a real hard time not trying that Pougsie? Gulch harder trail. And although harder trails are a rush, being broke down so far from home would take years off my life instead of feeling young. This is why I would tow .

I drove my 1980 CJ5 from ogden Utah to enfield Connecticut. The longest single day was from Utah to lincoln Nebraska and down to Manhattan Kansas. I towed a waverunner the whole way as well. The Jeep did very well but with a soft top the key is to have ear plugs to avoid noise fatigue.

That defeats a bit of the purpose for me. I want the trip out and back in my perfect scenario. Honestly though that cant happen anytime soon. The share a hauler idea may have some merit. Interesting idea. If we all showed up at Daves house in Cjs could he really turn us away?

After reading this it sure makes me glad I live where I do.

So, I just today drove the CJ from my soon to be old house, to my soon to be new house. One way from Williamsburg, VA to Croft on, MD, a little less than 200 miles. I stayed off of the highways, stayed on primary roads the whole way, when I stopped for gas about half way I figured I was getting 16.8 MPG

She road well the whole way, stayed with traffic and it was a good trip, even loaded with . I get here to the new place and the wife tells me "I was expecting you to call me", thinking in would break down along the way, I kissed the CJ on the hood in the driveway

I think Jeeps are like anything else. Drive'em on the highway and they are happy enough to keep going as long as you can stand it, Take'em off road and twist'em like a pretzel and things break. Within reason, road miles are easy miles.

I just realized we are talking about long trips in CJ. I don't think they are designed for long trips. They are square and happier off road.

I took my wife's 4dr JK to San Diego and it even sucked compared to other modern vehicles. I would only do long road trip if in no hurry as part of the trip.

I check my Jeep for loose parts before leaving and upon return with any off road trip . It's amazing what works loose on a trail.

I am changing my mindset when it comes to travel/journeys. We so often look at the destination as the goal and we want to get there ASAP. When you are driving off road are you focused on the destination or the journey. I started setting my GPS to shortest route instead of fastest time when I am cruising in the CJ. I travel roads I have never been on and see many things the JKs on the highway never will see.

Even going on some of the small trips in my CJ that I've typically done repeatedly in my car have become interesting because of this. When I travel to the same destination with my CJ, I take side roads to avoid the highways. The trip became better than the destination.

That is so true. I always likened it to pushing a box thru a wind tunnel!
