Got done with drivers side rear brake, took off passenger rear. Hooray for me... completely different brake drum... Went ahead and looked at the rest. I have 3 like the one on the right and the one one the left is the odd one. Will this make any difference till I can afford to buy a new set for the rear?
1979 Jeep CJ5 with 304 V8, T18 Transmission, Dana 20 Transfer case with TeraLow 3:1 gears, 4.88 axle gears, Detroit Locker up front and Ox Locker in back with 1 piece axle shafts, 36" SuperSwamper SX Tires, Shackle reversal, MileMarker Hydraulic winch, MSD 6A ignition.
The drum on the left looks bigger. Brakes on an axle should match. Is the inside width different?
Do you have different size shoes for each brake drum?
I am wondering if one drum got replaced with the wrong part.

What we're looking for is if the inside diameter of the drum on the left is actually larger than the one on the right. Measure it with a tape measure to make sure.
Did that one come off real easy? Are the shoes worn the same on both sides?

1978 CJ7
Silver paint with black hard top on 33" radials & eagle alumium rims. Good looking ride and have done lots of work to make it look and run great.
Stock equipment is 258 carb, power brakes, power steering, hard top & hard doors (per vehicle gross weight) tilt steering wheel, big brake package with large rotars & drums, T18 Trans with low 6.4 granny gear, Dana 20 transfer, Dana 30 front axle, Dana 44HD rear axle with 3.73 gears. True Trac ft & rear.
I was around jeeps in the 70's and drove a 1973 Jeep Truck. My family had 4 jeeps at the time. We also joined a jeep club back then too. So about 6 years ago looked for a Jeep CJ and found the vehicle above.

The one on left looks to be a 11" drum....
Used on the Big Brake Package on the CJ for like two years it was 76-78 if not mistaken. Also used on some of the Dana 44 rear alxes in the early 70's.
I have a 1978 with the big brake package....... larger rear drum of 11" x2 and a larger diameter rotar that is thicker too. This is a better brakeing package and is desirable.
My 1978 has a AMC20 rear axle with the big brake drums.... odd ball that is desirable..... I changed my rear to a HD Dana 44 rear axle from 1974/1975 and it has the same large 11" drums.... the big drums....and big brakes. I did some checking and the Dana 44 and AMC20 BigBrake use the same drums and brake parts...... They are interchangeable. Pretty cool for my swap because order brake parts for 1978 and will still get the same large 11" x2 drum, shoes, and spring/hardware that will fit the Dana 44 Rear.
The back plate that holds the brake shoes and parts is most likely NOT the same for the big brake and std brake packages. So small and large drums cannot be exchanged.
That is background info...
Now about yours....
1973, 1974, 1975 CJ had a Dana 44 rear, a HD 44. I think this went back to 1972 but not sure....
If you do have a Dana 44 then you most likely have the 11"x2" drums. The one on the right. Do not mix the large and small drum.... since they have diff diameter they will grab/stop with a different amount of force and will cause some pulling of vehicle when breaking.

Quadratec Cat 2011.... Brake Drums for rear alxes, Dana 44 rear axles
1970-1971 Cj 10x 2 " drums
1972-73 Cj 11x2" NON finned drums
1974-75 Cj 11x2 Finned
1986 10x 1.75 rear drums
If you have a 1972 should be 11x2" drums that are NON finned.....
Their cat is very valuable for seeing if parts from diff years will fit you own CJ
Best regards
ps
Not on the 2011 Quadratec Book, but my 1978 CJ7 take 11x2" Finned drums for both the Dana 20 Rear Axle with Big Brake Package and the 1974 Dana 44 CJ rear axle that I swaped in.....
Fins stir the local are and increase cooling with air movement and also increased surface area.
