Hello everyone.Proud to become a jeep owner again [1977 CJ7 ]and to join this group.I`m looking at a set of us mags indy slot wheels.everything looks ok but the backspce is about 4 1/2 inches.will this cause clearence issues? It looks like stock wheels are about 3.75 inches.has anyone tried these wheels? they are 15x9 with a zero offset as near as I can tell.sometimes the salespeople are a little less than knowelgable.I know this topic has been done to death but couldn`t find the answer.please let me know if I`m posting in the wrong spot or breaking any other rules Thanks for any info ron

I think you should keep the backspacing as little as possible. Since you have the "Narrow Trac" axle this allows you more ability to squeeze thru tighter spots easier and more control than the "Wide Trac" axles, but your turning radius is a bit less and the more backspacing will give you less turning radius. Got that figured out?

I'm with torx on this. For a narrow track axle going the other way from 3.75" is a better scenario IMO. More like 2.5" BS would be my ideal choice if I could find it.

for us southern boys that from time to time sling a little mud. I say the less back space the more clearance from the spring to the side wall. I find that large spaces clear better than tight spaces.:D

Is it standard practice to use spacers to clear things like disk brakes and such in street cars??

I appreciate all the input.I agree less backspace would be great.I don`t like the idea of spacers.I cant find any aluminum slots in the desired size, bolt pattern, hubsize, and backspace.love the look of the original cj slotted wheels but they seem hard to come by.I`m going to restore this one as it is the one I want.CJ7 Renegade ,levis.rustfree ,2 owners with 36k original miles.6 cyl 4 speed.Anyone know of any aftermarket wheels?

I'm not trying to hijack here but.... I pulled a wheel off today and measured from the wheel mounting surface to the back of the rim it measured 3.75 inches. So is my back space 3.75? And if so what if I want the wheels and tires to stick out further? Do I need 2.5" back space? I have read threads on this but am still confused.

that is how I understand it.If no other deminsions change (the offset) you would gain1.25 inches in width.butI`m no expert.learning as I go

YES that would be 3.75" back space:chug:

YES you move both rims and tires out as you shrink your back spacing:chug:

I am currently going thru the same thing seems that all the wheels i like have a lot of back spacing which is hard to fit on a cj

I would shop at one of the jeep suppliers like Quadtra-tec that carry wheels specific to jeep with your bolt pattern. 3.5" to 4.25"b.s. should be about right depending on your taste.I am not a fan of tires sticking way out past fenders like a 2.5"b.s. or spacers would give you. To each his own.

I am not a fan of the tires sticking way out either which makes it difficult to get bigger tires and not loose turning radius

Right now with 3.75 " backspace my tires are about even with the flares. I do like the look of a little wider stance. So if I got 2.5" back space wheels they would stick out 1.25" past the flare? I am looking at these wheels. Anyone have any experience with them? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PCW-152-5885R2-5/?rtype=10

Yes to the calculations. Those wheels are pretty common and I know a few that run them with no problem, my cj came with them on it but stock b.s. and spacers for the offset.:wtf:

Back in the day we called those "reversed rims" .The rim was riveted to the center so we just drilled out rivets ,turned center around, welded back together and you have a lot of off-set with little b.s.. also as noted it is sometimes hard to get the larger tires to clear with out decreasing b.s.
I am on both sides of this as I have one CJ with tires tucked in and the other with 33-12.50 on 15 x 10" sticking out. mike s.;)
