I am looking for mechanical sending unit kits for both my oil pressure and temperature gauges. I currently have electrical sending units and neither are working. I figured that since I need to replace them I will go mechanical. What are you guys using and where did you get them? The jeep is a '84 CJ7 . Thanks.

I got mine from Autozone it's a 2" with a white face made by Sunpro works great anf fits right in your dash and easy to hook up.

My oil pressure is from Auto meter, seems to work well enough so far and fits the hole. I will say that the mechanical gauge seems to take up a bit more room behind the dash, I had to heat and mold the defrost duct to gain a bit of clearance. This may be no problem with the later models with different heater configurations.:D

Auto meter's in mine.:chug:

Do you guys have part numbers and links to what I need exactly? I will need all new gauges, correct? So how will that work with my gauges that are in the speedo of the CJ? I am trying to order it all up today so I can mess around with the jeep this week and get it all taken care of.

The oil is easy but with the temp you will need to mount a hole new gauge. And when you buy a mechanical gauge you will get every thing you need to hook it up.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. :cool:

on the same note can we have some pics of where to hook the mech. water temp gauge up to.... I also have an 84 CJ7 that is in need of gauges but the current sensor is to small of a hole for the mech one....I have heard of drilling and tapping but would like ALOT more info before I go that route

There are drain plugs on the side of the block that you can use.

I know this thread is from last year, but I'd love to hear the outcome and/or see any pics! My stock temp gauge is dead and I'm looking at other options. Thanks!

This is where I put the sender in my inake manifold right next to the coil in my Edelbrock Performer mainifold;

This allowed me to keep the electrical sender for the 'idiot' gauge in concert with this mechanical gauge.
The gauge fit just next to the defroster duct behind the dash in this position;

It's a tight fit but by removing the glove box I was able to tighten down the thumbscrews on the temp gauge. I always prefer wide sweep 270* gauges which is why I went with Auto Meter, no other in my area had wide sweep by any other maker.

Looks great! Hoping I can find a spot for a mechanical temp sending unit on my stock 1985 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . I'd really rather not drill and tap holes... any tips are appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks Alex, while I'm running a 360, there's plenty of 6 cylinder folks here and elsewhere that'll be more knowledgable than I.

It should fit in one of the drain plugs in the side of the block. Thats how I did it in my truck.

That'd be handy and easy on my new three row radiator as not only does it have a drain petcock but two other fittings in the lower tank as well. Although I don't think this'd be the optimal place to put the sender for a mechanical gauge on this radiator 'cause this'd be post cooling.

Kickstart, if you are looking for some help here, I would suggest that you start your own thread.

I would start buy going the the parts house and see what they have so you can have a hands on feel for what you need, use the old gauge and fittings/sender unit, for sizing. they should have everything you need there, checkers has a brass bin. they might have the fitting you need.
