And finally a 1981 jeep cj7 258 hardtop
I just really looked at the mileage on my speedo and it says 3830. When I bought it back in Sept 2011 I glanced at the speedo and thought it said 38300. The old man I bought it from said it had been a farm jeep all it's life here in texas. He was the second owner and said all he used it for was driving around in his cow pastures as did the guy that owned it before him. I have noticed that the streering is very tight and so are the Transmission rear end and everything else. I have a 1981 CJ7 . WHat can I check to find out the real mileage?

A good tell can come from wearable things like foot pedal rubbers and such but there's no computer to decode or the like so you have to be the detective. Hard to say if 3830 would be better than 38300 though as sitting is not desireable either.

Now that you mention it, my pedals look like brand new. I tried running a car fax but they haven't sent it to me yet. I now what you mean about sitting for a long time.

I am thinking this is just one more way to brag about having an incredably low mileage jeep.:D

They do show up from time to time. A friend of mine found a 76 with 1800 miles on the clock. It had been flat towed behind a motor home with the drive shaft dropped and even then it was just a trip to the Rockies once a year.

His even has the original white soft top.

I would dissect the odometer. If none of the rollers are loose and nothing can move, then the 38300 would have been impossible and it was merely confusion of the eye / brain circuit back in september. The odds of loose number rollers all rotating and stopping at the same numbers only one digit place to the left are probably the same odds as that lottery ticket in your wallet making you a rich man!
Although it does make you the winner of the original Jeep with the least mileage on it contest!!:D:notworthy:

I just rebuilt the carb on it a couple days ago. It had been rebult before and runs great now. The jeep was stock when I bought it. The seats and carpet didn't have any wear spots.

Might have OEM spark plugs.

How about the filters?
