Heres what I found when I went to adjust the clutch on the Scrambler. I cant believe it didnt just fall out.

clutchadjworn.jpg

It was held in with this unusually long return spring.

What does that long spring actually attach to? A hole drilled into the front spring hangar of course.

Heres the new set up I ordered up. The rod is a little better design. And thats the correct spring that mounts to the bellhousing.

Well where else would you drill a hole.

Aparently on the other side of the spring hangar as well. Then you realize Ooops wrong side.

You have to laugh. You always see screwed up stuff on Cjs. Theyve been around long enough to go through atleast one cycle of morons. :D

Well adjusting out the clutch didnt work very well. Im not quite ready to convert to the auto just yet so Im gonna replace the clutch. Since I stole the doors for the Salvage CJ7 the Scrambler has made its way back in the garage. Ive had the tonnaue cover sitting around quite awhile and decided to start there. First I needed to source some metal for the struts. I got some 1.5 in. pieces of steel from a friend at work.

Well my friend had torched me off two pieces of metal to use for the struts to keep my tonnaue from loading with water and looking like a mobile pond. First step was to lay them out , measure and cut fit. Finally found a use for that channel bumper and made it into my work table. :D

After trimming them down to size I simply put the flat stock over a block in my garage and hammered down the last 2 in. into place so they lock in the mounts that were already on my bed. I left enough length in them to "prop" the cover up and let the rain roll off. Here you can see how they are bowed. After that out came the grinding wheel to fix up the torch cuts.

Heres how it looks on. It secures to the bulkhead using a little larger windshield retainer more or less. Still need to order up some snaps for the tailgate and adjust some others. The full soft top idea I originally envisioned is gone by the wayside. Vicki and I both agree its been very nice having a "truck" :D. A Xj is coming for her and the kids.

A couple little things I havent added. I never had a Hardtop Jeep till I bought the Scrambler. I knew nothing about fastening them and noise whatsoever. Last year I put the 1/2 hardtop on just like I got it.

Only this time I bolted it down a bit and didnt have to hold the front down with my arm out the window at highway speeds :D. It would still loosen a bit and creak at times but I dealt with it. 2 screws in the windshield frame and 2 bolts into the bulkhead.

This time around Id like to get it a little quieter and a bit more secure. I dont want the windshield screws backing out , or the creaking of the top on the bulkhead.

So ... Ive used this before around the house and its worked pretty well. If you note in the bottom left corner of the package it says this weatherstrip is Negro. My kids assure me that it must mean its " Pimpin" wich in this day and age is not only acceptable but a preferrred lifestyle. :D

On the Salvage CJ7 I used weatherstripping similar to this and applied it directly to the hartop like it should be. That way when you remover your hardtop in spring you just have flush metal and no weatherstrip hanging out.

That being said , Im applying mine on the removable bulkhead and two small areas right behind the doors. Im hoping to go with a bikini top along with my tonnaue cover and a wind jammer over the summer. I'll reapply some fresh stuff next year after I fill some factory holes and clean up some snap areas.

Heres some of the adhesive weatherstripping applied the way I said. I left the white backing on it for a better pic in my not so well lit garage. hardtopweatherstrip.jpg

A side effect of putting the Tj flares on the Salvage CJ7 was that I got to use the newer sidemarkers on the Scrambler. Little things can make a big difference.

And of course its not just a bunch of tickey tack little things going on. Progress is being made on the power steering / front axle swap.

The auto tranny will probably wait till spring. But pieces for each have already made their way into the garage. After picking up some sawsall blades tomorrow a much bigger piece of the puzzle should enter its way out of the cold and into the friendlier confines of the garage.

Looking for some opinions. I have a stock tire carrier in good shape. I was thinking about using it on the Scrambler since Im only running 31s on it. Should I leave the tailgate area clean or slap the spare on the carrier?

You need a spare, theres realy no where else to put it. :chug:

First time im posting anything on your threads and i just wanted to say thank you for taking your time and writing all these up. I started reading the

$600 Salvage Cj-7 thread and really enjoyed it. I have now read all your threads and they are great! :notworthy:
As for the spare i would have to agree with OLD DOG. If you have a spare you might as well put it on. Never know when you will run over a nail again.
