Build Thread My Cj-8 build thread
On a side note I lost a little Jeep cash for a good cause. I have a very good friend whos getting up there in age. I feel its my duty to take care of him. I took him for a Sr. well visit. He likes Jeeps as well.

Took a little time off from working "on" the garage and worked "in" it for a little. I got the missing motor mount bolts in.

This wouldve been pretty difficult if I didnt have the engine hoist. I was able to move the engine forward and up using it.

I also figured out the "magic valve". I believe it is a vaccum regulator. My valve cover is the plastic style and had a rough life under the p.o. I guess. I found it was leaking pretty good by the pvc valve. After sealing this up I can run the carb minus the valve and all is well. Time for a new valve cover. Unfortunately mine uses the rocker bridge.

That's cool you finally figured out what the heck was up with that. I have an uliminum valve cover, one of these;

It doesn't fit on my '78 head, so it's just eating up space in my garage. You pay to ship it, you can have it...

Tried a search in the drivetrain sub forum an didnt come up with much. I believe my Scrambler has the plastic one with the rocker bridge. Alot of replacements out there say the wont work with that set up.

Please tell me Im not stuck with a plastic replacement. :(

Just read your thread... I don't know if it'll work or not, but if it will, the offer stands :chug:

Im all over that. Let me make sure that"ll fit and let me know what it is to ship to 18080. :chug: Have a part # for it?

I just pulled it out and snapped these pics of it. I can't find a part number on it anywhere. But, it looks exactly like the one pictured, and I pulled that pic of of Morris 4x4, I'll find you the part number for it.

you just have to get rid of the stud girdles and drill and tap the head...some of them come with self-tapping screws, but I don't believe that one does. I put one on my 83 CJ7 when I had it and the head had to be drilled and tapped. as far as the stud girdles go...I just remember removing them..i don't remember having to replace them with anything. As far as I know..the only thing they do is hold the valve cover on. you should be able to loosen the nuts and remove them...on the 4wd website...they have the exact same type and it says..."drilling required"...meaning that you have to drill and tap the head.

Thanx for the info. Im going to grab it and have the head drilled and tapped. Definately a better solution than whats on there now. And I cant see replacing it with another plastic one.

hey pete you said you fixed the hard top somehow. mine is messed up and would like to know how you fixed yours.
tkx

Not quite sure what you mean but Id be glad to help. Are you talking about bolting the top to the bulkhead?

Sometimes its jut the little things that make a difference. Since I put my 1/2 hardtop on its been rattling around driving me nuts. Cj-8s use 4 bolts going up through the bulkhead and into nutserts captured inside the 1/2 top. After about twenty or so years these strip out and are worthless. Unlike the Cj-7s there is a double wall of fiberglass , you cant just clamp it to the bulkhead. I'll take some pics tomorrow and show you all how I decided to give this sloppy top a good solid fix.

here is the post, but after reading it again its not what i need fixed.
my problem is where the top attaches to the windshield frame. the nutserts are gone and not sure how to fix it

Let me look a couple things up. I remember a thread or 2 on different ways to fix this. Some people used some really nice latches to secure it but I'll have to do somw web searching to find the right threads I am talking about.
