What are your thoughts on a car seat in the 79 CJ5 ? My daughters fits good, and the seat belt is holding it in pretty good, no major movement, just a PITA putting it in or out.

What is the missing indicator by the top knob on my dash? How do I get heat to come on so when winter comes I can keep a little warm? And what is the "proper" way to put this in 4wd?

Is this the original back seat because I thought they were supposed to flip forward? I have about 2% storage and no movement of the seat at all, which is fine because I plan on taking my daughter on neighborhood rides in her car seat. (on road rides)

Anything look funny in the engine bay? I noticed lots of things had been removed, and a random rubber hose dangling going to nothing towards the firewall side of the engine on the top...

Any help I can get would be great, I know nothing about these old Jeeps other than they are tricky to get started and need to be warmed up apparently. ;)

Not all seats flip forward, yours is one of those. The dangling hose is the drain hose for the cowl. Other guys can help with the other questions. Oh, and welcome home.

The top missing button indicator is the Fan - Turn right , Left off. It also looks like you are missing the oil pressure gauge. It is suppose to be where the gas gauge is on the right. You may want to check the PVC valve on top of the valve cover. Its hard to tell by the picture. Any other help let us know. This is the site for all of your answers

I ust played with my heater controls while the jeep is warmed up to figure out the best ways to get the heat going. What's really important is figuring out how to get the dfroster going while the soft top is on, on a cold rainy night... foggy windshield / soggy arm from window down sucks! But I still love to drive her in the rain! (I'm missing my defroster vent tube that supplies air to the dash vents...

Thanks!

And yes, there is a gas gauge installed, but no wiring ran to it.. apparently last owner expected it to just magically work? ;)

Anyways, the TEMP and GAS gauge are both non-functional, but the SPEEDO and Turn Signal lights work on the cluster gauge. How common is it for both of them to be bad and the rest be good?

I'm assuming the problem is at the gauges since they are both not working, just don't know if its bad sensors, or gauges shot? (probably water damage)

Is there a blower motor or something I should be hearing? I can't seem to figure out how to turn the heat on?

Awesome! This helps a ton, and the schematics really help. I am assuming 2 of possible problems it is, either no power to the fuel gauge, which appears to be ran in series so if its not getting power, TEMP gauge wont get power.... That, or the 2 gauges are just shot.

After having to do some wiring last night to get a 2nd speaker in the dash to work and installing a kill switch for the radio, theres no telling how the wiring is for the gauges..

Thanks for the help, I'll check into it. I'd at least like a Fuel gauge

Yes.

On mine its a switch, on yours may be a turn knob.

Mine has 3 position switch, low, hi, off

Then 3 knobs.

Temp (cool - hot)
Fresh air (recycled or fresh air)
vent selection (defroster / vent flap operation)

But I have a 74. You're looked slightly different...

Well I guess I'll give my opinion on the question everyone seems to be avoiding. I love my Cjs for sure , but I dont think Id ever have either of my kids in a car seat in one. The most I ever hit with my Cj was a deer at slow speed and a couple trees. I just cant bear to think of what could happen with someone running a light or stop sign and clipping the rear of your Jeep. I know it sounds like a nice cool thing to do with your daughter but Id wait till shes older for sure. Maybe its me getting older or sentimental cause my kids are now in their teens , but imagine how youd feel living for years with something like that. Hate to be dreary but thats the way I feel on the matter.

Good call. All of my kids are adults so you know I was avoiding that one. I agree 100%. By the way we are not getting older just wiser and experienced.:chug:

I appreciate your opinion, and have no issues with you bringing it up, just wanted to see who else, if anyone, did it so I can keep her safe as possible. She ride in it today with me to the babysitter which is all back roads and top speed of 30mph.. I was watching for everything, other drivers included.

When I am on the trail, I always wave at opposing drivers to notice if they see me, If they don't I get nervous. Having John Strenks CJ gauge diagnostic info is something every jeeper should have.

Yes the Gauge write-up was VERY helpful... now I only worry if my fuel gauge is reading correctly or not... Guy I bought it from said he topped it off a short while back and never drove it much after, so its showing a full tank currently... lets hope it starts going down after I drive it a little more.. as said, it doesn't get driven but maybe a 10-15 mile total trip everyday to my daughters baby sitter and to work..
