Name that sound

I'm not sure if this link will work, but here goes. Last night my 360 started making a chirping noise. I have the belts off to rule out alternator, water pump and PS pump. If this you tube link works here is a video.

Kinda sounds like sheet-metal being rubbed, somewhere.
What was the last thing you did to this Jeep?

The most recent thing was a new fuel pump. I put a long pipe on the fuel pump and listened and I think it's the culprit. There really isn't anything else up front moving that could be causing the noise unless it's coming from the timing chain but I don't think that's it.

Looks like I'll pull the pump this afternoon and replace it again. I'll keep you posted.

Rocker arm starved for oil. Pull the valve cover(s) let it idle and you should find the dry one.

Find out why it’s not getting oil. Could be clogged lifter or pushrod. Clean it out.
Don’t run it until it’s fixed!

I would think anything under the rocker covers would be a ticking noise. I would put my vote in for the new fuel pump, as it is a scraping noise. Another maybe would be at the vibration dampner. A stethoscope could help here. My wallet has one of those vacuum cleaners also.

“Ticking” is the result excessive clearance between a rocker arm and valve stem. If a lifter or pushrod is clogged, valve clearance will be maintained but proper oiling to the rocker will be suspended.
The “chirp” is the rocker rubbing on the fulcrum... metal on metal due to lack of oil.
This is usually caused by infrequent oil changes or the filer being bypassed by malfunction or excessive pressure.
Since the lifter is constantly adjusting itself it is more likely just a plugged up pushrod. The lifter can bleed off on top not providing enough pressure to clear the pushrod.
Again, remove the valve cover(s) and look. The sound at idle should be substantially higher with the covers off. The rocker should be relatively dry as well. Making it pretty easy to locate.
Remove the suspect rocker AND pushrod. You should be able to see through it end to end. If not a suitable piece of solid wire and or compressed air should remove the obstruction.
Once cleared reassemble everything and test. If the sound is good, slap yourself for not changing your oil & do that too.

The result was............the new fuel pump I installed about a week ago. I picked up a new one from O'reilly's hoping a manufacturer change would result in better luck. Swapped it out and no noise. I hope I can get more than a week out of the new, new one.

Time will tell.
