Need some advice on a CJ7

Hello everyone old jeep owner seeking a new jeep. I had a couple of jeeps many years ago in my late teens into early 20's when I had little money and even less sense. I am currently looking at a 1985 CJ7 with a 108k, AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , auto, hard top, no lift, rust free AZ jeep. Everything is there including an aux fuel tank where the back seat should be.

A/C has a leak buts owner claims to have had it charged. The driver door is cracking under the window on the inside. The body under the spare tire carrier catch plate is also cracking or tearing I didn't get a good look at it. Wiring harness has Disney written all over it but every except the clock and tach work. It has a 4bbl carb on it, but it seems like overkill to me. Last but not least it has 31" Interco Trxus mud tires on it and it wanders a bit. Would changing to GY wrangler 235/75/15's and an alignment help any with the steering or not? Is it worth $6000? I can probably sell the tires that are on it so that is a freebie. The rest is going to require some work and money (budget is $8000 total). What do you think? Throw your ideas and opinions at me please. Thank you.

Just my thoughts. I think there are better cjs out there for that amount of money. I found mine for alot less money. Good deals are out there if you keep looking. It seems to me 6000 to 8000 would buy a cj that would need a lot less work. Prices are different in certain locations of the :us:.

Just to add I am looking for a mostly stock CJ with an auto as my fiance will only drive a stick if I twist her arm off.

Oh no we are good there she has an 04 Liberty already. That's her baby when it dies she is getting another one. This will be my jeep but serve as a back up and fun vehicle. I drive an 09 Malibu right now.

If I had $8k to spend, I would find one that needs a little love for less up front and make it my own. You can just about replace every component on a CJ for $8k! My$.02

You can get a pretty nice CJ8 for $8000. Id hold out.

Thats way too much. Keep looking. By the way, it has a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a four barrel carb?

Yep it's a 4 bbl. Any suggestions on where to look? With our humidity around here metal rusts overnight if it has any moisture on it. Everything here is a rust bucket and $3000 or more. There is a 1983 Laredo in Texas, looks great but the pics from underneath are pretty bad.

You could buy a rust bucket and restore the body. Depending on how much you wanna spend. That was my plan. I'm going to end up having to get all new metal except for the hood and tailgate. Until then I just enjoy it the way it is. I just made sure it was mechanically in decent shape.

Well I took everyone's advice and passed on the CJ7 . I went 180 and bought an 01 Mustang convertible instead. I will keep looking for another CJ7 in the mean time.

Here it is 4 months later and I am still looking at CJ7 's. I have found another one for you folks to look at. I have extra photos that the owner has texted to me. Is this a good price for a 36 y.o. jeep with 148,000 miles? Let me know what you think please. Thank you for your time.

Okay it had floor boards, bedliner, a straight 6 (the fuel filter needs to be turned so the return line is up), the dash looks good and the top is on saw horses...... More, we need more pictures......

Nice looking Jeep, nice paint, nice tires, decent bumpers.... not bad.
