Hey I'm new here and have a few questions. I just bought an 82 CJ7 off my boss. Really know nothing about it. Sat for years. Only used to plow. I have it running. But after a little it dies. I know it has a holley two barrel on it. 5 speed. In line 6. And just as a side note, I do have history in the auto field just not this old. I'm a certified master tech for ford, but not with anything this old. Any and all info would be grear. Thanks just don't bist on me too hard! Lol

first thing I would do is determine if the problem is fuel or fire..if it's fuel it could be many things from the choke not opening to the filter or lines stopped up..if it's loosing fire after it runs a little while I would look at the coil..when old coils first start going bad, many times they will work until they warm up and then stop..once they cool off they will work again

I would check for bad:
-Gas
-Lacquered Carb
-Plugs
-Rotor
-Cap
-Plugs
-Wires
- And Most Importantly- Vacuum Leaks, Vacuum Leaks, Vacuum Leaks

Let me be the first to say :ww: The carbs on these 258s have a lot of problems you may want to start with a rebuild and look into doing a Nutter bypass and the Team Rush upgrade. There are lots of posts on this it will make it run much better.

If he has the Holley Carb wouldnt it have already been nuttered? I would also drop the tank, blow out the main and return lines, pull the sender to check for :dung: in your tank and replace the pick up sock. Of course after doing the steps in post #3

-" And Most Importantly- Vacuum Leaks, Vacuum Leaks, Vacuum Leaks"
x2

On a side note How does one become a master technician for ford with out learning about old school carbs and ignition systems?? Not trying to beat you up just curious

To add to Saddle Tramp's list would be the ignition control module and distributor pick up coil.

in his defense i've been through ford courses. They covered diagnosis on the current crop of computer controlled headaches. im le most of the guys on here more experience with carbs then fi.
i'd strip it down to 1976 specs, minimum vacuum lines and no comp control and put a MC 2100 carb on it.

This is very little info to go on.
I agree with everyone else.
