Well, the baby is going to be 1 next week, so it was time to buy her a Jeep... dragged this home last weekend much to my wife's surprise... she thought I was kidding... I told her I dragged home much worse.
It really isn't that bad... frame and body are going away and a new frame is already there and a new body will be coming... so that takes care of a lot of it... getting a Dana 44 for the rear out of an 86 and the front will be a Dana 30 for now... I have a T-18 , it needs to be rebuilt... I have a Dana 300 , it needs to be converted to a 4:1 low, I have front sheetmetal, I have a different engine that I know ran when it was pulled... so all in all, not too bad all around. I have all the interior stuff as well, so I can piece it toghether.
it is just the money for the body and the time to do it!
67 cj5,225 Dauntless, D30,chrome molies, detroit, D44, full floating detroit, custom steering, disc all the way around,2 inch lift on 31s, armored up
70 cj6 4 inch lift
Sound like a project this guy on earlycj5 did, he decided to go to his garage of old parts and build a Jeep, he had a spare frame and body though, when he finished he only had to buy about 4 parts to get it running, he found a title and got it titled and now it is his favorite jeep.
That is what I am hoping... as little as possible to get it moving! But I have been around this block too many times... I know that isn't going to happen.
Yeah, probably one more and then I can start building again... been almost a year since the last one was completed and all I have done on mine is maintenance.... good thing I have another job
Been a while, but I have been busy with work and the baby and the holidays... I have acquired the donor Scrambler, got the RE 4.5 suspension in and other misc parts... going to be starting on it soon.
Updates are here... mostly the drivetrain, rims, and the rig.
I am also working on restoring new(old) wheels for my wife's Jeep... I found original slot wheels for her 76, but they are not in the greatest of shape... lost of elbow grease and I should have them up and running.
Man, I am digging this up from the past... but I have some movement on the Baby Girl TJScrambler project... also some movement on another "baby project"....
Big Sister will be welcoming a brother or sister in late September... so does that mean I have to build yet another Jeep... man, I got to stop with the kids... LOL.
Well, that aside, that gives me a few months to start getting back on the Scrambler project.
here are the parts I have kept, salvaged, bought new, and horse traded for.
it is 3 pages now and more to come, I just need a few minutes to get to it between the morning sickness my wife has and the stomach bug my daughter has... it is like an exorcism a minute in that place!
Baby girl #2 is coming at the end of September, so I am trying to get as much as I can done before then as I know I won't have a ton of time after that... little ones take up a ton of time and energy... not to mention the $$ I was going to use on the Scrambler
I have been doing a ton of work on the frame... basically since it is aftermarket, nothing fits quite right and when it does, sometimes you have to re-tap the holes, make them larger if they are pass throughs, or drill and tap new ones. I am NOT COMPLAINING, I love this frame, it is unbelievable, but, when you use beefier steel, you need to drill more.
The drill is getting a workout, as is the tap set, but it is all coming together.
I got the following done over the past few weeks:
1) Rubicon Express 4.5" lift installed with all new greasable shackles and the pontoon floater u-bolts plates. U-bolts had to be cut down to length to fit inside.
2) Billstein Shocks mounted and installed... needed to drill upper mounts (grade 8 hardware)
3) Kilby Gas tank skid plate installed with grade 8 hardware
4) HD Power Steering Bracket and AGR steering box installed - grade 8 hardware
5) HD Steering Brace installed - grade 8 hardware
6) Belly Skid with lowering kit for the eventual T-18 /Dana 300 combo installed... waiting for engine install to cut and mount up everything... also waiting on torque arm and torque stud bushings for this... they should be here by the weekend.
7) Drop Pitman arm installed, HD drag link and tie rod mocked up.
8) Waiting for poly bushings to start the install of the sway bar.
So, the state of this is that it is sitting on 31" tires currently with the 1986 CJ7 axles (Dana 30 /Dana 44 combo)... 35" tires on 15x8 chrome Laredos are waiting in the wings, but the smaller tires on the rollers are easier to move and work on height wise. Also, this thing is definitely growing in weight... pushing it around requires a bit of oomph compared with stock framed CJ7 's I have done in the past.
I found a set of Garnet Seats to go with the build up as well as receiving the wood side boards.
This is all just the mock up stage... eventually it will all be blown apart, cleaned, fixed, painted, etc. and put back together.
Here are some pics of what has gone on since the middle of May when I last reported in.
That is it for the last 6 weeks or so, I hope to get a bunch more done in the coming weeks, but we will see how it all unfolds... everyone seems to be coming out of the woodwork to want to come and see the baby belly and we have been having to go out to visit people... and the festivities continue this weekend!.
Looking good!
Can I ask what product/grit you used to blast your frame? I just bought an Eastwood sandblast pot and am getting ready to start some projects that need rust removal. Also, how many bags/lbs of grit did you use?
I'll be following along to see how this one turns out!

This frame was already blasted and primer-ed when I got it, but on other frames, I have used mostly slag... some heavier stuff that really helped cut through all the junk, gunk, and ... 80 grit I think If I can remember right.
Baby Samantha has arrived... everyone is doing well... just tired. More when I get some sleep and some time... with 2 little ones, time is a precious commodity right now.

Congrats! Been reading the threads and enjoying the pics, so keep them coming when you have time! And keep building those jeeps! Get the girls involved as they get old enough to fetch you wrenches and drinks, LOL, They'll love helping daddy in the garage! Mom will have to compete with you for their time!
OK, slacking over... kid is 4 months old tomorrow and I have had 2 major bronchial infections from the older germ factory bringing me home "presents" from daycare.
So, this weekend, the Scrambler gets a NarrowTrack outer swap... basically ditching the 5 bolt hubs for the 6 bolts and to make it easier, basically just swapping from the knuckles outward.
The reason is for some more strength, but also, the backing plates from waht I can see on the 86 axles are rotted, brakes are frozen to the rotor and the rotors are warped... so since I had to replace all of it anyway, might as well do it with a little bit stronger setup... we will see how the weekend goes... should be nice and cold AND snowing, just like laset night and the night before.
Hey Certifiable, I just wanted to let you know that your write up on the silver jeep has helped me in so many ways.. I believe that is the one you did a tub swap on... well I followed your lead and so far it is going pretty well thanks to your write up... Just wanted to say thanks man.. and congrats on the future jeep owners.... just need a little dash of pink...
