I travel to India 2 or 3 times a year and see government CJ-3s and CJ-5s all over.

I am assuming they bought the tooling when Jeep discontinued them. I'm not sure who makes them or what type of drive train they have in them but my guess would be Tata.

I have seen all kinds. they like to stretch some of them too. Last November I saw a 5 that must have had 3 or 4 back seats in it. Kind of like a stretched golf cart look. Haha

5's are typically are what i would call patrol vehicles and are in most cities. My final destination is near Pakistan and I see Flatty's there sporting machine gun turrets with WW2 British Bren MG's on top.

I will dig through my pics and videos and see if I have any of CJ's. If not I will get some possibly in June but if I don't make it then it will be October. Monsoon season is in between.

Wow cant wait to see the pics. I always wish someone would start making CJs again. When I win the lottery thats whay I'll do.

you should check into importing fenders and tubs.:D

Yes, Willys licensed companies all over the world to make Jeeps. Mahindra is the company in India that makes jeeps. They are Willys models such as the CJ3b . Mahindra even has the rights to sell and market them as Willys Jeeps. They just can't export them to the US. The engine is made by Peugeot.

The CJ3b and other jeeps have also been made in Japan by Mitsubishi.

if they can't export, could you go over and buy one, ship it over? then you'd have a brand new one. :D but for how much:confused::(

probably not as much as shipping costs to the US.

probably not as much as shipping costs to the US.

I build custom equipment and ship it to our plant there and I have purchased equipment there and had it shipped back and it's not as expensive as you would think.

I recently had a machine shipped from there to US. It was about half the size of a Jeep and I had it sent air freight. It was around $1000 US. I would guess about $1000 to $1500 for a Jeep on the slow boat.

Corperate duties are about 3 to 5% although i'm not sure about private duties.

Shipping a full container from India to USA is about $3500. Then more for customs and duties in the US, whatever that might be...

Just find an old flat fender and restore it yourself is a much cheaper route!:chug:

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Mahindra would have been my second guess.

I've only seen the 5's moving, but I am inclined to say most are not 4WD, but the Flatty's definately are.

I would say that's about right for a US based shipping company to import. The trick is to use an Indian company to export

Rupee's go alot farther than the dollar.

(Most other currencies are going further than ours it seems...)

Nope. Nothing from the AMC years (or later)
My understanding is they can only make jeeps from the Willys era.

:(:(:(

Yall sure know how to get a fella excited and sad in a 15 second time span. Now I know how my five year old daughter feels...

The one problem I see is Customs letting you unload the jeep here in the US due to our safety regulations and the fact that all vehicles have to have been crash tested. The way around that might be to part them down, ship, then reassemble once here in the states then title/plate it as a kit car.

I'm no expert but I don't think that applies to importing one vehicle for yourself. Just like building a kit car. Even the makers of these kits don't need to crash test. Each kit is for a hobbyist and you are the manufacturer of one car. The government won't ask you to crash test it. I'm pretty sure the same applies to importing one car for your own use. It must have all the required equipment and safety features such as windshield wipers, correct lighting, seat belts etc.

All I know is that Bill Gates bought a Mercedes sport car of some short and had it shipped to The States but US Customs impounded the vehicle when it hit the docks, primarily because it hadn’t been crash tested is what the article said, but the car was a “one of” kind of thing and said to be too expensive to slam into a wall just to see what would happen. At the time of the article the car had been siting still in impound for a few years and for all I know it’s still there unless Gates got the rules changed. I’m not sure about what safety requirements are required for kit cars and thought that that might give a way to get a “new” CJ3b .

There's a difference between an assembled turnkey automobile and a box of parts (a kit car). Turnkeys gotta meet federal emission and safety standards, kit cars just have to meet state licensing specs. Some states are easier than others. I used to buy donor cars for their frames, register the donor, then part the little buggers out to build the "replicar". It's possible to build a car from completely new parts--frame and all--but it sounded like too much licensing hassle to me.

At least this was the state of the art when I was in the biz lotsa years ago.

When I lived in Massachusetts a whole bunch of years ago as I remember it a vehicle title was just your pink slip and not something issued by the State as I was use to out here in the West. It seemed to me to make registering a stolen vehicle a pretty easy thing.
