I just couldn't get past the so-so reviews on aftermarket nerf bars and their fit on the CJ5 . I ended up at the metal supplier and picked up some 1-1/2" schedule 40, 90 degree elbows, and base flanges and welded them up. I had an old grate door mat that I cut for the non-slip steps. A weekend and 2 coats of bedliner paint later they're mounted, sturdy, and functional. It was a fun weekend project. It only took a little harsh language and creativity to get the angles correct on the flanges.

Are they as low as they appear to be? All in all nicely done. I bet they help getting in and out of the CJ.

They're pretty low. I think the drop was 6" with the 33" tires, no drop would have left the steps right the bottom if the chassis. They work great at the deer hunt lease. Not doing any boulder crawling

looks nice. Hope you dont have deep ruts at the lease
