JEEP CJ7 304 STOCK
Need help. Just rebuilt my 79 CJ7 jeep AMC 304 v8.That sit for 4 yrs without running.
Replaced gas tank ,all fuel lines, sending unit, fuel filter ,fuel pump.
I can get it to run if I pour gas in carb. but it quits if I quit pouring gas.
Everything on the jeep is stock, Appreciate any help or ideas on what it could be.

With what you have described it sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Start with verifying fuel pressure to the carb, like is it even getting there. Check if the accelerator pump will even squirt gas by activating the throttle.

If will only run when you dump gas down the carb then it's not getting gas to the carb. You said you put in a new gas tank I wonder it you got a fuel line kinked our smashed putting the tank in. You need to see if gas is getting to the fuel pump. I will bet you aren't.

x2 on the fuel delivery.. Mine had the same type issue. I replaced the tank, fuel lines filter and rebuilt the carb. I could not get it to pull fuel from the tank. I used a marine style prime bulb to pull a prime up to the pump but it still would not work. Changed the fuel pump and she fired right up. I would change the pump just to take it out of the loop.

I replaced the fuel pump, along with evrything from carb to and including tank.
I am going to check and see if I am getting gas to carb and how much today.
will follow up on results. thanks for the help everyone.

Buy a bulb style primer that you see on lawn mowers or boat tanks. The one that are big, black and made out of rubber. Disconnect the line before the carb but after the mechanical pump and prime it that way.. It might just need help to get it moving through the line.

As a follow up on the problem with my jeep and not running unless I poured gas in carb, after cleaning carb and putting a kit in it it now starts and runs just fine, thanks to all for their help.
Just to add for any one else with a jeep rebuild that has set for awhile cleaning carb and a new kit would be worth a thought.

Glad to hear you got running.
