New Start/New Jeep

New Start/New Jeep
I did both in different spots.

For the floor where your feet go (which always seems to be gone) I just cut it out well past the rust. Where it curved up in the front it overlaps just a bit. Where it meets the side of jeep it meets flush, same towards the back where it meets the tool box under the seat.

Mine was all rusted out over the rear wheel wells as well. I cut/knocked all the rust out. Put down some rush inhibitor. Then welded a piece of metal over that I made from a cardboard template.

As far as brackets go; if you look under the jeep you'll see some C channel that the floor is essentially sitting on. A bunch of mine was all rotted out so it had to go. I used a mix of C channel and square tubing to replace that as well as make new mounts for the body mounts.

I'm not good enough to make it all pretty so I went with the armored tank look.

Jason,
Yea I was kinda thinking the same...doing a little of both to kinda make the are work.

Man the PO before the guy that gave it to me (my cousins husband, didn't really do to much with it, just bought stuff and parts) i don't know what he was thinking...I was taking out the old emergency brake, and while I was underneth I could really see the damage/wrinkles ;) and he just cut a BIGGGG square hole and slapped a piece of white, rusty sheet metal over it, and it looks like I'm gonna have to rebuild a couple of braces underneth, but it'll be ok, cuz when I do I'll have a chance to beef up the under body a little.

Also on another point, I keep seeing everyone use that POR stuff. My plan is hopefully to use a bed liner product on the inside, but for all the little nooks and crannys, (first i know that it needs to be grinded, sanded and cleaned, and cleaned, and cleaned) but for all the little areas, can i just put that (POR) on, and put the liner on top of that? Will it be able to hold up as good?

Thx again

I used some spray on rust inhibitor that seems to have worked, but I live in the desert so that helps me.

Alright guys check this out.

This is what the PO had bought to put on from a possible 85 gm
Front axle is a Dana 44 10 blot pattern, six lug axle, don't know the gear ratio yet
Rear axle is a gm 8.875 12 bolt pattern, with a gear ratio of 3.07, Limited slip, non locked. So here's a question, thinking of putting a ratio of 4.10 in the axles but will the 4.10 gearset fit in them, or would it need to be more of a 3.73?

Are these axles already in the jeep? I'd take a look at the tag/bol stamp on the axle to figure out what it came out of. Or you can just measure and figure it out with the axle lug pattern. The tag may tell you the gearing, or just mark one of the lugs and count how many times you have to spin the pinion to move the lug one rotation. Hopefully you'll have a usable gear ratio up there.

4.10 is a decent all around ratio in my opinion. If you want to run a larger tire I would go to 4.56. I had 3.73 and 33s on mine when I got it and it was fine actually; up to you.

The axle housing itself will take those gears for sure but if you have a 3.07 in one of them, you'll probably need to replace the carrier. Carriers usually have a split at around 3.50 or so where you need a different carrier. You'll have to look into that though on the GM one; I could be wrong.

to answer your questions

1. no, there not on the jeep, the PO bought them and held on to them to put on later. Im working on finding out what i have on the jeep already, cuz i want to sell them off. I did find out that the axles on there now are like 47" wide i think, but the ones that are going on are like 68  but he wanted to make it wider, but i'll make sure that it works with the steering and not rubbing...etc.

2. the tags are long gone, but i did measure and count the lugs, on the back it has a 12 lug pattern, with a 10" measurement? and plus its stamped 'gm85' and some other numbers, i also opened her up to count the gears... 43 on the larger gear, and 14 on the smaller one.

3. Im thinking on putting 32, or 33's on it.

this is my idea of it, be able to take it out and do a little rock crawling, not too heavy duty, little mudding, but also be able to drive it alittle around town, with out pegging out the RPMs

So here is an update on some of the progress.

Dropped the gas tank, took off some brackets, and spare tire mount and confirmed the new rear axle specs.

so i feel bad that i haven't had a chance to work on the baby the past few days (weeks) :(:( , but thought i'd give you some sort of an update.

the gas tank has been dropped, and inspected. so far it looks really good, no rust or chips, dents chunks missing. the skid plate is in really good shape, other then some dirt (cough, "alot"). so other then replacing, fixing some of the obvious things on it, like the straps, and some bolts, pump, but thats expected. (going with stainless steel nuts and bolts)(and fuel pump for another time)

tires have been taken off for a while, and sitting on stands. planning on removing the tires, and maybe keeping them for a stand by, and selling the rims? a set of 4 chrome 5 lug 5x5 i think, but i've got a few people that maybe interested in them.

on the note of the gas tank...is there any suggestions on adding another tank, or just carrying jerry cans. i saw a post where a guy put an extra tank under the driver seat...but i don't know about that. maybe consider a bigger tank (if it'll fit) or anything anybody else has done that works, that you recommend?

so i know this isn't really an update on the jeep, but i won't be able to work on my baby for a while now.

After braking my left ankle gonna have surgery on monday, and will be down and out for a while.

hope everyone wasn't waiting on me to work on it ;) ....

other then that, well see you guys on the other side:chug:

Sucks to here about your ankle. :( Heal up right or you'll regret it when you get older , trust me I speak from experience.

On to the Jeep. Being from Texas I wouldve liked to see you get a better starting point but thats a moot point now. I noticed you said youd like 32s or 33s. Why are you so crazy about using the extremely wide Gm axles? Any thoughts of this being street driven? I dont know the laws in Texas but Id never get away with that here in Pa.

Take your downtime while your ankle is healing and figure out what you want out of your Cj from the begining. Search search and search again for answers to any questions you come up with. Post questions. By the time the ankle heals you should have a good idea of what you need/want. :)

I appreciate the advice and help... I plan on tryin to take it easy, as much as I can, I've seen what doing to wrong thing to early can do from other family members.

The jeep :D. So this is kinda why certain things are the way they are, I guess?

My cousins husband gave me this CJ5 and had bought these axles and motor mounts. Didn't have enough time, so he found out that I was looking for a project to work on, and offered his jeep.

So the reason axles, he bought them and they came with the jeep, do I want them on the jeep, uhh, well I think it would be nicer to have wider axles for stability. But it's use is gonna be like this, its purpose.will be off roaring, but o want to have the ability to get in, go to town, and drove around, but just on occasion.

I don't know how to answer the question of wether it's street legal, I hope it is, but the guy that gave it to you did a lot of research on it, with the things he bought and getting the title... Etc. But alot of what I'm doing is because he bought it already and if I can use it and save some $ I'll try

Hope that helps, and I still plan on being out there Dec of 2013

So I know this isn't really an update on my jeep, but since this is the first time I've logged in for about three weeks since my surgery, I figured I'd give an update on my self, which in a way is an update on my jeep, since I'm the one working on it. I broke my ankle on both sides, had surgery and with a plate four screws and some wire I'll be back to work In about 8-10 wks. Anastesia really sucks to come out of and really hard on the stomach.

With this time on my hands I've been able to do a lot of research and find what I want and don't want on my jeep. Look up prices and deals... So that's helped alittle. Can't wait to be back on the saddle, so to speak, but I plan on being out there with you guys next year with both the jeep and myself running at 100% LOL

So guys I'm back and better then ever. Been working hard and trying to catch up and stay on track.

I've posted a few things but haven't updated my rebuild here. So the dash heat pump and sport bar is gone. Working on getting three bolts off to get the tub off then drop the axles and mount the news ones.

That's all for now, you guys take it easy and talk to u soon
