I had a leaky water pump so I got a brand spankin' new one from NAPA. I had replaced the thermostat around September and the system was working fine until the new water pump. After running to idle, the top hose is very hot, none of the heater / manifold hoses seem to be warm at all, and the reservoir went from full to overflowing. Does this have something to do with a need to burp the system, or is my new pump not working? After cooling for a bit I took the cap off and the reservoir went down to just above the full level. Any ideas? If I need to burp the system, what is the best way? Should I just take one of the higher hoses off of the manifold and see if I can pour some water straight down in it?

To further complicate things my temperature gauge has never worked. I just want to make sure I'm not going to cook my engine or anything.

i haven't changed a water pump my self "yet" but i have a thermostat, and i do belive you do need to "burp"

correct me "those out there" but it has something to do with air bubbles expanding as the water gets hot, and gets caught in the thermostat, as it travels through the hoses, and sometimes gets stuck...again, i have not first hand experianced this, but have read, and had friends tell me all about, (at least the the bad things that have happend)

Is it the correct water pump? impeller blades pointing the same direction? my neighbor had a problem with his when he got a rebuilt motor and took the lower hose loose and put the garden water hose in the top of the radiator to force out his air bubbles

*update*

I started it running again to see if maybe after taking the cap off it would have corrected itself. After running for a few minutes it started to sound like maybe the water pump was running dry - a light scratchy sound coming from that general area. After it not going away for a minute or so I shut the jeep down. I carefully lifted the red lever on the radiator and hot coolant came out. I put my hand on the upper hose and it was hot, and felt like it had bubbles running through it. I couldn't discern which direction they may have been coming from.

It looked like the exact same pump except it had a different style of impeller blades. It was this one:

I'll run outside and take a picture of the old one.

*** Here it is, and another picture of how it is belted, I figured I have the V belt, not the serpentine as there is another belt that feeds the alternator.

Please PLEASE do not tell me I got the wrong pump. I can't tell, it looks like the blades on the old one are almost completely neutral. Everyone on this forum fibbed saying that it was a ten minute job. It took me for frigging ever.

It's the wrong one, isn't it. Just tell me I can handle it.

The one in the pic looks like it should spin opposite of the one you have a pic of. (To me anyway)
Sounds like there is something wrong with the new one, I would take it off and exchange it.

After reading up a little bit, it sounded like my symptoms were a backwards pump. I went to napa, returned and tore everything back down, got the new pump on and *PING*! I broke the frigging bolt off that's on the bottom of the pump. It broke inside the block. What's the best set up to get that bolt shaft out of the block?

Get a bolt extractor set. I've seen cool ones with backwards drill bits--sometimes the bolt will unscrew if the drill bit sticks.

Probably a ten-minute job.

I hope you get things sorted out, flex, sounds like you're having one of "those days"
I have a water pump that is leaking and will be opening it up soon.

Epilogue:

Correct NAPA part number for the pump for my V belt engine (even though it says non-V-belt):

TFW 43001
NAPA AUTO PARTS

After removing the old pump the jeep gods had mercy on me. There was about 1/8th" of bolt sticking out from the engine block. I was able to ever-so-carefully remove it with linesmans pliers and later vice grips. It was real close, the metal started to "taper" where the pliers gripped it and it almost didn't happen. I only had to remove the radiator instead of figuring out how to take the grill off, etc. if I had to use a drill. It turns out the pump I originally got from NAPA that was labelled for my V belt system was in fact spinning in reverse, cavitating the pump and causing all kinds of mayhem in my cooling system. I got the new pump from napa labeled "not for V Belt system" (what I assumed to mean serpentine) that rotates in the normal direction and it worked like a charm, no burping or other nonsense. After some more reading I guess the reverse pump works on a belt system that has the belt looped over the pump spinning in the opposite direction of the fan somehow.

Anyhow... a few lessons learned. I just wanted to put that up there for future persons who might run into the same thing. In other news, I have a barely-used reverse rotation water pump that I would love to pay-it-forward to someone if anybody has the need. The only other tips I'd have for someone about to do this operation would be to be prepared for a good amount of radiator fluid coming out from behind the water pump when it is removed, even if the radiator itself is fully drained.
