Nothing Over 50 MPH!

Nothing Over 50 MPH!
Yeah.... I'm about to use their business as our next tactical training op site. We have some really nice .50cal just waiting to reach out and touch something:)

OldDog, that link isn't working.

Yess please do I hate 4 wheel parts.

I'm going to look for someone local with some experience to look at it and help me. I'm so frustrated with it all.
That might be a good idea. There's only so much we can do across the internet. It sounds like you have too much free play. That wouldn't be a caster issue or a problem with the draglink angle.
I assume the shackles are new.

Ok, so I am a new Jeeper myself, but I had a similar problem with my 2500 Power Wagon.

I noticed you have now steering stabilizer. Adding one will help with the steering.

Have you checked to see if you ball joints are out? Jack up the front end, grab the tire at the top and the bottom, try to move it back and forth (top to bottom). If you have any play then your ball joints are out.

Like I said, I do not know much about Jeeps, but I was running 37's on my Power Wagon and had to solve the "Wobble of death" issue. To be honest I never got it all worked out. From 70 to 75 is was scary, but once I hit 80 it was smooth sailing.

Sounds a bit like the early days getting to and past mach 1, controls went away or even operated backwards as I recall.:eek:

Gents,
I wanted to post a response to update you all on my current situation.
I took the advice of Dave, Old Dog, and the numerous of others here on the forum. I figured out my caster to be somewhere around -4 degrees.
So.... because I have put so much money in the suspension I opted for the steel shims. I used 8 degree shims and as you can see from the pictures, I moved the drag link to the top of the knuckle vice under. I can not tell you how much better the jeep drives. It is truly night and day. I will post before and after pics. Many thanks to all

Here are the pictures. The one on the left is the before the shims and drag link move, the one on the right is after. Also note that the future plans is to swap out the Dana 30 for the Dana 44 and do the Hi-Steer system.

BusaDave is right on with his picture he adds to his posts. the more parallel the drag link to the tie rod the better.

Thanks again to all

and I did forget to add, while the drag link is close to my springs on full flex it will touch, but during normal use, daily driving, etc.... its good. It starts to get close only after putting flex on that side

Sorry to bring up an old thread. But I decided that after my steering was still "sloppy" I ordered a reman power steering gear box and went with the borgeson steering shaft. Wow what a difference. I'm shopping around to find some Dana 44 knuckles so I can do the high steer too. I have looked at the RR high steer kit. Although the Dana 44 knuckles are very popular to keep the Dana 30 axle, I'm seriously looking at going with the RR High Steer Kit

Tarry I looked at doing that. Like a 44 knuckle on the Dana 30 . I ended up ordering the Rocky Road OTT High Steer. I also got the steering shock since it has a longer shaft. I will post pictures after the install. I know there are a lot of opinions on that kit so I will add my 2cents when I get it done.

:)Tarheel,

Is that Rocky Road High Steer setup going to work with your early Dana 30 spindles?
:D:D:D:D

Thats what the guy said on the phone. Stated it was specifically designed for that application. Could be a lie.... but they have a lot of history and from the couple guys out in El Cajon who do this type of work, all say that for moderate wheeling(no rocking), it is a good set up. I believe that most folks will do axle swaps or at least the Dana 44 knuckle swap.

ive been wondering why my jeep cant go over 55...then i saw your pics...it all makes sense now.

i also just paid an exuberant price for a not so quality install.

its hard not knowing any good shops around.

I too had the same problem, knew it when I bought the jeep, you could see how bad the castor was by looking, the guy I bought it from was a good welder but didn't know much about front end allignment, anyway, I have replaced the entire steering system, all ball joints tie rod ends and bearings , get this, I welded in 12 degree steel shims and I can drive it at 65 mph with minimal problem, I plan on taking out the shims and rotating the knuckles to put the drive shaft in a better position and adding a sway bar , should drive like a new CJ5 , not sure but it probably wandered when it was brand new, I was 10 years old then, its a 75 with soa, 35" tires , very driveable now but not perfect.

Looks like they turned the pinion up when they put the new perches on .. Got a shot of the pinion from the pass side at the same height as the pinion so we can see the angle ?

Never mind got here late didn't see the other 3 pages of posts !! Good job though on the diagnosis!

This same thing has happened to me. >50 and it is so unstable. I was also told steering box could be the issue. However my steering box was recently rebuilt. I have about 90 deg of free turn on my steering wheel before it will turn.
