Nothing Over 50 MPH!

Nothing Over 50 MPH!
I like the type of brace that goes to the opposite frame rail. Like this one:

I think it braces best.

There are also some like this:

And yes, this prevents most cracks that take place at the bolt holes but it is still possible for that whole section of frame to twist slightly. Not much but I like the idea of going to the other frame rail.

Thank you all for the help. My new steering box (new was $295 vs rebuilt $235) works great. My 90 deg of steering slop is now down to a manageable 15 deg.

:)David,

Good to hear things are now going your way, make sure you check that toe in.
Glad we could help you!

Hello Tarry 99

Yep I fixed the toe in, alignment, got new tires, and new steering box, and things are much better, however at 50 mph if I accelerate to 60 and don't correct the Jeep will pull into the left lane.

Any ideas what causes pull to the left when you accelerate from 50-60?

It's manageable however not preferred.

Thx DAB

Hello Busa

Where can I get the brace that goes to the other rail?
Are you using one and if so please send a picture.

Thank you

:)DAB.............Good for you, glad to hear you got it fixed. So at 50 it goes straight but at 60 it goes left? I would probably talk to the guys at the alignment shop to see if they really did anything?.............On a Jeep there is not much to alignment its usually bushings at the shackles & springs that keep it going straight! If they have not been replaced I would start there.........other than that a spring that is softer than the opposite side or perhaps air pressure............but between 50 & 60 not really sure. Try switching the front tires from side to side?

If it is pulling when you accelerate I would check the bushings in the rear it sound like it is twisting under power. I don't think the problem is in the front end.

Mtnwhlr is on a good track. It sound like you are experiencing a bit of rear steer. Does it do it any other time or just higher speeds

I think these guys have it.
I had that problem when I first got my CJ. When I gave it gas it would go to the right. Let up off the gas and it would go to the left.
The U bolts holding the rear axle to the leaf springs were loose. Tightened them up and the issue was resolved.

Same thin was happening on my 80Cj5. I chocked it up to age of vehicle but found the loose bolts when I started the tear down. All tight now!

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

Hello

Here are a few pictures. I will check the u-bolts nut torque.

By the way, where are the bushings?

Thx

:)The Bushings are at the spring ends..........in one picture you can see some red hanging out between the shackle that is a bushing.........hard to tell how good they are tell you take the shackles loose............U-bolts If there 1/2" usually above 60 but if they have been moving around you should see some shiny wear marks where it's been moving.

Looks like you have a little shackle lift also.........I think stock was 3.5" between the bolts.........I also see the shim in the rear between the pad & spring..........also if you notice the way the shackle is clamped in the one picture you sent it is not straight or parallel.........that allows the body and rear end to move or roll.........all little things that contribute to handling.........

Thank you again Tarry99.

So to correct this I would replace the shackles and shackle mounts that are on the frame?

Do you guys recommend a certain type of shackle and mounts?

Thx
DAB

it might be as simple as tightening bolts. I would see if they are tightened as Tarry99 has mentioned before you go buying parts!

:)Dave.........just get back to a stock shackle length and one that is built at the correct width for your springs......Those were probably for a later Jeep with the wider springs.
