Hey that title could be a country song!

After keeping careful track of my mileage, using a GPS, I headed out this morning knowing I was on the fringe of making it to work, but hey the Jeep has been getting ~10.5 mpg and I had 135 miles on the trip meter. Plenty of gas to get to work .......... WRONG! At 140.7 miles the jeep shut off like someone turned the key off. The transition from the fast lane to a nice spot under an overpass was exicuted with style.

So I grabbed the relatively new gas can from the back and started ...... well I started swearing and cussing at this point. Exactly WHO decided that we all need a special I suppose environmentally friendly nozzle on a stinking gas can!!!!!!!! I fiddled and fussed and polked and prodded the new fangled nozzle until I was able to get some gas to flow. Most went slowly into the tank, I guess. More than I like went on the ground leaking around the springy uppy downny inny outy part of the nozzle. All I could think of was, "thank god we are saving the environment". All the while gas was leaking on the ground ... and on my shoes ..... and clothing.

I should have brought a funnel, with a hose and a clamp of some sort to keep it from constantly falling down.

Do any of you have a decent method, other than getting gas on time, of filling your tank with one of these new filler contraptions that come on gas cans these days? I think I'll cut or drill the fuel flow restrictor off, but then knowing my luck the darned thing will leak worse than it did before.

Oklahoma credit card!! :D

Epic tale. Well said... I have the same problem with those things. I think I used a piece of rolled up newspaper last time to bridge that gap. It's all I had handy...

A hose, yeah know that wouldn't be a bad way to handle the situation at all. Just set the 5 gallon container on the wheel well, for high flow or just leave it in the back, it will always be above the tank. Just start the flow and wait until she's sucking air .... easy to roll up, smaller than a funnel, yes I like it, will deffinately do it thanks.

about now is when I would find myself to be extremely motivated to fix the fuel gage.:bang:

I write my mileage down on a dry erase board on our fridge when I fill up. I know I average 16.5 mpg. I ran out once this Winter when I was using 4 wheel drive alot. The only Cj I ever had that has a working fuel gauge is the Limited . Its not exactly road worthy right now. :D After overheating recently I believe it is time to get all the gauges functioning. :chug:

I hate the new cans, or should I say spouts.
I'm so glad I still have a couple old cans that work.:D

IO - It really wasn't a fuel guage problem. I knew it doesn't go all the way to empty (nor does it go all the way to full), but is consistent about when I need to find gas. What got me was the mileage. It's been very consistent about 10.5 mpg which should have made AMC 150 miles possible, but this week I've been driving it to work. Most miles on the freeway and I confess to being way to agressive and obviously my mileage has suffered for it. This is why I put the gas can in the CJ before leaving this morning.

Elwood - I've looked for the old style snout, all I can find around here are the new environmentally friendly kind that aren't environmentally friendly at all. If you or anyone else knows a source this is the time to talk about it. I was sorta hoping that would happen here today. This noon I did drop by an ACE, got some hose and drained the rest of the gas out of the 1/2 full gas can. Worked, but need some refinement, a stiffer hose to go in the can and something similar to go in the fuel filler neck.

This is not an end game, I'm still learning about this Jeep. As some have never fully understood, I am taking steps to improve the mileage or miles per tank full. First the new 3.31 gears, then a 20 or is that 21 Gallon tank along with extra fuel in cans on the tire mount. A carbortor tune up or rebuild is in the cards. I know it is possible to bebuild my 2150 but V8 carbs. scare me to death and is fully in the territory of the professionals.

I dont see why you cant get at least 14 mpg with your set up. I had a 360 / T-150 / Dana 20 with 4.10s and 33 in tires while averaging 13/14 mpg. Your gears are higher , tires are smaller , and they are more street friendly. You need some tuning. :)

No disagreement from me there. It's sorta got to be in the carb where more tuning would help. The engine doesn't smoke, it's got great compression and it starts well. I've got new wires, new plugs, fresh oil, great oil pressure, every rolling bearing has been changed and tried different timing. Timing made little to no mileage difference so about the only thing left is the Carb. ..... Hmmmm I haven't changed the air filter yet, tonight that will be changed.

I keep one of those real long funnels. I've also fixed my gas gauge with an aftermarket gauge and sending unit. It's still a little off but I have marked it with red pin stripe on the gauge. So now I just fill up every payday

41mag - The PO replaced the original tail lights with the new BIG style. These things sit right on top of my fuel filler and in the best of times it's a pain to fill. At home I've used a long funnel with sort of extended lip on it, unfortunately it essentially lays flat so filling the tank is like trying to piss on a black widow spider. It can be done but you've got to pay attention all the time.

:) I've allowed this to wander, happily I might add. But actually I'm good with my Jeep and will work it's buggs out in time, this was really about how awful the new gas can snouts or nozzles are. Hate'em. And how to get around having to use them.

Hey at least know one stopped to ask you for a light!!:D mike

i use the siphon all the time and it works well but for the cj i started using a modified Transmission funnel with the end cut off and a short piece of 1 inch hose hose clamped/rtvd to the bottom and a piece of paracord with a s hook tied to the top then just stuff the hose in the fill and hook the s hook on the body and bypass nozzles entirely

Whooooott yes this past week end was the open of our very own Tractor Supply and yes it is very close to me, we are talking about minutes from my home! I am completely pumped about the whole thing. While the opening was last weekend they were actually open the week before, some of my money has already been left in their store.

I carry a spare electric fuel pump with a long cord to plug into the lighter socket and two short lengths of fuel line. put the in line in the jerry can on the back , the other in the tank and the go up front and plug it in and wait for the pump to do he transfer. Handy to gas up the lawn mower, etc. too.

Not a bad idea at all, unfortunately I'm all about using the least amount of Jeep space as possible.
