Is there any difference in a taper bearing verses a roller bearing for a one piece axle up grade? Is one better then the other?

There is a difference. Yes the tapered are usually preferred over the roller type. Moser used to use roller brgs. for their 1 pc. axles but switched over to tapered's sometime in the mid 90's. What axle brand do you have?

I have not bought one yet. Moser or g2 would the g2 be ok? I am doing the gears and brakes also when I do it. Any hints on the install for shimming. Hate to press it together and have to redo it for some more shims.

All one piece axles are now made with tapered bearings.
The PO installed one piece axles in my CJ when the wheel bearings went out I called all the companies that made one piece axles and found out The AMC20 one piece axle was originally made by Moser. Superior copied the design right down to the same bearing and sold theirs under many other names. When Moser switched to tapered bearings so did Superior.

Cj I have the rear end set up being done buy a fellow that is old school he has done a lot of rear ends. I have to learn a little more before I would risk a crown and pinion set up. The shims I was worried about are the ones on the g2 set up. The Moser uses a spacer you grind and the g2 uses shims that get put on before the bearing gets pressed on. Since I have not used ether of the set ups I am looking for the easy one to install. Am I blind were is the thanks button?

I have an old set of axle shafts that came (uninstalled) with an extra AMC20 rear end I picked up.

They have the <F> which if Foote tool (company who makes Superior axles) so I called Superior and asked them and go the canned response of "you need this part number for bearings and seals" and didn't even acknowledge that there had been different bearings used over the years. I found similar info to what you posted when someone couldn't get parts for an older set of 1 pieces, so I wanted to see if I could get parts to install these.

What are the differences in the actual axle shaft that takes tapered bearings vs the shafts that take a roller bearing?

When I was calling every company that sold one piece axles I had a hard time getting anyone that knew anything. That is until I got a hold of a technician at Moser. He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. (Support is an excellent reason to buy Moser) Even if I had the old ball bearing type he recommended switching to the tapered bearings. Problem is the tapered bearings were wider. This meant I would have had to take my axle shafts to a machinist to have them ground down.

Dave what is the main fact that makes taper better then straight bearings?

I would think the fact that the tapered bearings have more surface is the reason the newer axles are better. I did a google search and found this: Guide to bearings
Ball bearings ... are usually found in applications where the load is light to medium and is constant in nature
Roller bearings ... are normally used in heavy duty applications

Good read Dave it only stands to reason when you look at the pictures that it would take more thrust. Thanks never dawned on me to google

I agree Dave that Moser's are great axles but some of their tech's aren't as astute as others. I had called them to find out when the change was made in bearings, telling him that I had gotten mine back around 1996-7ish and he said they didn't change till after 2000. So I assumed I had the old style ball brg's and would have to track down a set because I didn't want to have to get them machined. When we took my axles apart (to replace seals and add a Detroit) it turns out I already had the tapered brgs. on them and then I just got the whole rebuild kit from Moser.
So it pays to look first but the change was made sometime in the mid 90's.

Moser sent me both styles of bearings so I could send back what I didn't need.
