One peace axle
All one piece axles are now made with tapered bearings.
The PO installed one piece axles in my CJ when the wheel bearings went out I called all the companies that made one piece axles and found out The AMC20 one piece axle was originally made by Moser. Superior copied the design right down to the same bearing and sold theirs under many other names. When Moser switched to tapered bearings so did Superior.
What are the differences in the actual axle shaft that takes tapered bearings vs the shafts that take a roller bearing?
I would think the fact that the tapered bearings have more surface is the reason the newer axles are better. I did a google search and found this: Guide to bearingsDave what is the main fact that makes taper better then straight bearings?
Ball bearings ... are usually found in applications where the load is light to medium and is constant in nature
Roller bearings ... are normally used in heavy duty applications
Moser sent me both styles of bearings so I could send back what I didn't need.I agree Dave that Moser's are great axles but some of their tech's aren't as astute as others. I had called them to find out when the change was made in bearings, telling him that I had gotten mine back around 1996-7ish and he said they didn't change till after 2000. So I assumed I had the old style ball brg's and would have to track down a set because I didn't want to have to get them machined. When we took my axles apart (to replace seals and add a Detroit) it turns out I already had the tapered brgs. on them and then I just got the whole rebuild kit from Moser.
So it pays to look first but the change was made sometime in the mid 90's.
