1982 cj7 all stock. has the inline 6 with a five speed tranny.
i have an 82 CJ7 that has the stock AMC20 . i can get a used AMC20 with one piece axles and arb locker with 4.11 gears. price is $500 with my axle core. another one is for sale that is also an AMC20 with one piece axles, arb locker and 4.56 gears. asking price is $350 for that one. i am wondering which one would be better as far as gearing goes for 33 inch tires, maybe 35's. will be driven every now and then on the street to different places. any help appreciated. thanks!!

If your thinking 35s at some point Id go with the 4.56. The 4.11 is pretty good for 33s , thats what I had in my CJ5 . It came with them in it though. I like a little lower crawl ratio so Id prefer the 4.56. Thats some nice prices on the axle though in my opinon.

:agree: Man for thoes prices I'd be tempted to buy them both, the arb alone is worth twice that new.

If you only get one get the 4.56

For 35's I would go with the 4.56's. Would you turn me on to the one you don't get :)

work the math and decide what you want to do. If you keep the five speed you can still get a decent top end on the highway but a 4.11/4.56 ARB locked axle with 33/35s behind a T-5 just doesn't sound quite right.:wtf:

the price on those axles is sweet and if they were in my town I would try to own both of them but I would lean toward the 4.11 myself.

I just priced out upgrading my AMC20 to one piece axles and 4:56 gears today. The total price just for parts was over 550 bucks! That doesn't count any type of locker but I do plan to install a spool I already bought years ago but never installed. I would also jump on the one with 4:56 gears...

I run 4.88s with 33s and it is a bit low on th street but great on the trail.

At 60 mph:

4.10= 2154 rpm

4.56= 2396 rpm

4.10 crawl ratio = 41:1
4.56 crawl ratio = 45.75:1

The Overdrive really helps with highway speed. I would never want 4.56s with my 33 because I have a T-176 . With your T-5 they are actually not bad. I have 4.10s with mine. I like it but our transmissions are totally different so I can't give feedback on what it would be like with a 5 speed.

BTW, those prices are INSANE. Just to rear gear a AMC20 is like 700 bucks. One pieces are like 300 bucks. Locker? Looks like almost a GRAND for it :eek:

For 350 bucks you should turn yourself into the cops for stealing. And that goes for both axles. BUY THEM BOTH!! That's just crazy.

I bought a set of 4.10 axles, with Dana 30 /detroit trutrac and AMC20 /trac lok, for 500 bucks and I thought I stole them. Those prices with ARB are nuts.

sweet guys thanks for all the info. i am just trying to gets parts and pieces so i can build a sweet rig over time here. the guy actually went down to 275 for the axle so i am going to be picking it up today!!

like others have said. the axles could be bent in half, as long as that ARB locker is in there, its worth the price you're paying. you could sell the lockers alone, on this forum, for more than the cost of those axles.
