So one of the things I love best about not living in comi fornia is getting rid of useless and power robbing emissions components and what not. So I'm basically making my own wiring harness at the same time. But I have no clue what the purple and gray wire coming from the fuse block go to. The gray has a factory end on it the purple has just a female connector.

Yes I know it's a rats nest hence the removal. plus I found terrible splices wrapped in duck tape. In the engine bay, the purple goes to the oil pressure sender and the gray was on the alternator (tee'd to another gray connecting to the voltage regulator) for the charge light indicator in the dash (upper right and far lower left in the pic).

Thanks makes sense. Neither are in use any longer but I'll keep the purple just in case

One of the best thing any CJ owner can do is untape, cleanup, and solder all the splices where Jeep originally simply crimped and then taped then up.

Actually I crip mine with built in heat shrink tubing same as aviation repair guide lines

When I did my fuel injection and engine swap, I pulled the entire wiring harness (engine bay, under dash, and rear) and laid them out on the dining room table. Removed all the tape and loom, inspected, soldered, replaced a few connectors, added some actual wired grounds, and then re-wrapped with plastic loom before re-installing. Some work, but WAY cheaper than a new Painless or other harness, stock wire colors retained for future reference and using a shop manual, no more crimps or butt splices, and I know that harness inside and out now. Fuel injection, ECM, electric fuel pump, and remote start/alarm circuits are all built-in and look stock (other than knowing none of that came with the Jeep).
 
TS, you take the quality of your work to high standards, and I commend you for that. With that in mind, if you had to crimp terminals to cable ends, what crimp terminal style would you recommend…

Manic is right. The connectors with buil-in heat shrink are great. I prefer the Ticonn brand. They have lugs, butt splices, spades, and rings. I also use their ratcheting type crimper. The ratcheting function is better than just a squeeze type because you have to get it all the way crimped before it will release. All available on Amazon. But to tell the truth, I usually solder even crimp on terminals.

Where do you have it mounted on the Jeep ?
On the side of the battery tray. Still trying to figure out where I'm going to mount the ground one like it. If you look at the one pic I posted with the wiring harness you can see it tucked up in the very top right corner of the Jeep (left side of the picture)

Ok I missed it in that one picture. I have some connectors like those I found along the way. Didn’t realize they were heat shrink. I don’t have an industrial heat gun. What are you using?
