I'm in the process of pulling the body off of my '77 CJ5 . This was located on the driver side rear fender up underneath. It obviously has something to do with the fuel system as the lines run from the tank. The large one has some sort of float in it. Can someone help me out. I've never had a Jeep torn down this far.

Thanks in advance.

That is part of the fuel tank vent system. The complete layout can be found on the net or in a CJ repair manual. What you have pictured is the roll over and check valves. A vent is used to replace the spent fuel with air in the fuel tank. Otherwise a vacuum will form not allowing the fuel to be pumped out. The charcoal canister is at the other end of the system. On a steep hill or rollover, those two valves will prevent fuel from running out also. A good way to check to see if the system is working would be to remove the gas cap after a drive and listen for any air rushing in. There is also a replaceable filter in the bottom of the canister.

Thanks for the info. I knew there was a roll over check valve under there somewhere. I was a little surprised to see it on the driver side when I pulled the tail light out. I have never heard air sucking when I removed the gas cap. I think there are enough leaks in the fuel lines and filler neck that creating a vacuum would be impossible.

Thanks again. You guys are awesome.

Thanks Peanut Butter. It's weird that my TSM doesn't show the fuel system as well as that drawing. Anyway, that is exactly what I needed.

Thank you.

Is yours a factory, AMC service manual?
Mine(MR-252)has it for my '85.

I did find it in my TSM. I was looking in the emissions section and of course it's not there. Not sure how I missed it when I went through the fuel section. Oh well, the eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be I guess.

Thanks.

No worries here-Sometimes I can't the keys in my pocket.:laugh:

I finally got the tub off today and the line that is supposed to go to the charcoal canister looks like this.

So now what? Do they even make replacement charcoal canisters? Should I just leave it capped? I don't have emissions to worry about but I also don't want to have any issues down the road if I should need to sell it.
