Part out or Sell whole?

Well guys, about 1.5 years ago I bought a barn fresh 1980 CJ5 . I knew it needed tons of work which I planned on fixing it up as I went until my daughter got out of school. As luck would have it, my friend found a 1980 CJ7 along with some other items that were for sale that he could only buy as a package deal. I'd prefer a CJ7 as that was my 1st car & what I really wanted but couldn't find in my budget. This CJ7 needs a little work but the body is straight & needs only minor things so I am going to buy it.
Hence my dilemma, I don't want to part out or scrap the CJ5 but I can't have both. I bought a Painless Wiring harness for it that I can return. I had taken out the engine to fix the rear main seal and saw the engine needs a total rebuild. I don't really have the money to fix up the CJ5 to running point but can if absolutely necessary. Is there a market for mainly stock parts that are parted out or is it worth trying to sell it as a project? Any other ideas I'm not thinking of? TIA

This is the way Id go. Hopefuly you save a Cj as well as saving yourself the time to part it out.

I think we all would ( unless he has some parts we're interested in ) Ive parted Cjs already. If their total rust buckets I have no problem with them being organ donors. What I do have a problem with is when they go straight to the crusher before I get to pick the carcass.

Hey guys, I totally agree with wanting it to be fixed up and I'll play the lottery this week to try & get lucky but there's only so much I can do. I'm hoping to sell it as a fixer upper in one lot.

I had a CJ5 that rust had got the best of it and I always wanted a CJ7 well a found one that had a engine fire and they tried to fix it with a cheap harness. When I bought it it didn't run but had a hard top and doors and other than the tub was in good shape the wiring was a real mess I bought it for $900 and parted the CJ5 to bring the CJ7 back to life. And the parts I didn't use I sold for about half of what I paid for the CJ7 . So the way I looked at it was yes another CJ5 is gone but it brought a CJ7 back to life and help many more with it's parts.

After a whole lot of work, the CJ5 is all back together & running like a top. I'm glad my friend had the patience of Job & got her in ranch ready shape! I'm selling her whole & will find a great home for her.
