Pics Of 231 V6 mounting location

Hi there,

I am in the process of dropping my 231 Buick/SM465/T-18 into my 1960 CJ5 frame, and just wanted to see if anyone had any pics to help me get an approximate location. I am kinda flying blind, as this is my first Jeep, and first engine swap.

Tater, There is no set location and Yes most of us that have installed one in an early CJ are just flying blind.........what motor mounts do you have? If you had some OEM Buick mounts out of a 65-70 CJ they at least help you on the offset of the motor to the drivers side by about 1"........the firewall on the driver side , the portion that will hit your Left side valve cover has to be dented in for clearance , you want the motor back as far as possible but still leaving clearance for the L/S valve cover , the right side is no issue.........if that Jeep had a 4 cyl in it before and the battery is mounted forward on the right side of the frame it can be left there but you have to change the way it's mounted to make room for the V6 oil filter........most guys take them out of that position and stick it on the passengers side firewall unless you want two battery's then both locations are used...........you did not mention what steering you have in your CJ.....if it still has the old buggy style Ross steering and your thinking of doing a Saginaw Power steering swap now is the time!

You need to get the motor, Bell and Transmission all bolted up and having it hanging from a hoist and start to drop it in and see where everything needs to go.....you may have it in and out of there several times.......best to start with the fenders and grill off.........once you think you like where it is fore & aft , and up & down at the correct angle , put the fenders and grill back on and check for clearance...........while you going through this fitting process the Transmission . shifter as well as the Transfer Case position and its angle to the rear axle is important.........Oh and the reason for the offset to the drivers side is to give that front drive shaft enough room to go forward next to the starter..........Your basically looking for clearance to fit everything from the radiator rearward............It does take some time to find that sweet spot........so don't rush it.

I would give measurements, but I am in OR and the Jeep is in AZ, can call and get info but someone on this forum should have info.
Suggest you buy OE radiator w/shroud and mount fan in center of, with OE frame brackets & mounts.
