Why are you going to need that to take the axles apart.:confused:
 
I need something to hold the yoke while I back off the pinion nut for the rear differential.

The current carrier bearings are dissintigrated which lets the carrier shift over enough so that if the weight of the jeep is on the tires I can't back the pinion nut off without the pinion just turning.

I'm taking the whole axle off (and then the front as well) so I can do a ring/pinion/carrier switch.
 
interesting. Does cinching that pipe down mess up the little tab that the ubolt cap pushes agains? (if I remember correctly, isn't there a little tab that sticks up at the outside edge of the yoke? I may be out in left field)

Do you use that method during installation of the pinion and setting the preload?
 
The pipe is very soft compared to the pinion, it has never damaged it.

I have used it for setting many pinions - I almost always have a floor jack handle laying around but never seem to have a wrench that fits when needed... :)

Sorry I missed the part of having to rebuild the R&P.

I made a wrench with 4 holes for the u-bolt bolts and a large hole drilled in it for the socket to go through.

The longer you own a jeep the more homemade tool you get.:D
 
Is this where some one tells me why using a 24" pipe wrench was the wrong thing to do?:eek:
 
IO, if you didn't mar up the yoke, I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work fine.
 
As I always say “anybody can do it, its doing it with class that’s hard". The dog has definitely out classed my pipe wrench.:notworthy:

You know, I keep thinking about the torque multiplier, the only time I have ever really wanted one was when installing a new pinion bearing. The crush sleeve liked to beat me! I bought a much better impact and compressor after I did the differential in my truck but I am wondering if that is going to be enough torque if I should decide to replace the bearings when I do the CJ differentials.:cool:
