Just asking to make sure that the way the clutch pedal return spring is setup on my 77 CJ5 is NOT correct. There is no return spring on the pedal up underneath the dash. I'm guessing it broke so instead of replacing the spring the PO decided to rig it up. It appears he attached what looks like a spring from a porch swing to the end of the clutch bellcrank and tied it to the front left motor mount with what I believe to be bailing wire. I'm guessing I can get rid of this spring and install a new spring on the pedal and be good right? This really sucks because now the clutch linkage is actually ripping the metal where it's attached to the lower firewall/body mount due to the stress of that spring. I'll be having to repair that when I replace the clutch spring for sure. I'd take a picture but I'm at work right now and can't figure out how to post pictures anyway.

Also, anyone have any suggestions on how to get the clutch bellcrank to clear the hedman headers? It's got a tube dented from hitting it constantly.

Thanks all.

I put a spring on my clutch pedal arm in my '86 to hold the linkage off the throw out bearing. It already was set up with two small holes for the spring to fit right in.

Attached is a page from the 77 service manual. The CJ's had an 'overcenter spring' at the pedal and a 'return spring' at the throwout lever (fork).
I just changed the overcenter spring on my CJ5 (broken and hanging under the dash), and while it cost $2 at Quadratec it took a good 4 hours to get the dang thing in place, in spite of having the 'Improved procedure' for installing it (TSB #9-02, also attached).

That's interesting, as in the later service manual, MR252 does not show that spring. Probably something that the bean counters omitted.
